For Sale: 1961 Chevrolet Impala in Concord, North Carolina
Chevrolet debuted the full-size Super Sport Impala in 1961. Only
453 cars were optioned with the SS package that included SS logos
on the side moldings and the trunk lid, a 'Corvette-style'
passenger grab-bar and suspension/brake upgrades. The current owner
purchased this '61 Impala 'Bubbletop' in 2008. He is only the third
owner and states that it is an authentic Super Sport with actual
mileage of just over 25,000. The retro-Chevy was restored with
comprehensive mechanical upgrades by CMX Customs, Summerville, SC
(2010). Pictures of the restoration are included along with
documentation for the upgrades. This powerful, handsome SS was
built to be driven and enjoyed - it is not a 'trailer queen' show
car. The exterior was reshot in factory Roman Red and the interior
is original except for new carpets and a '59 Impala wheel. The
upholstery is factory and the owner states that the front bucket
seats were a rare dealer-only installed option in '61. A custom
dash holds the factory AM radio (works), full gauge cluster and a
classic Sun Super Tach mounted on the column. (A replica AM/FM
radio/speakers is also included in sale.) A GM 502/502ci big-block
crate motor, installed in 2010, furnishes horsepower. It is fitted
with 'Fast' Programmable Fuel Injection, MSD ignition, custom
headers, stainless exhaust, a custom belt drive system, aluminum
radiator and aux. electric fan. The transmission is a 700R4 w/mild
performance convertor (est. 2,000rpm stall) that feeds a narrowed
9" Ford housing fitted with a Strange Trac-Lok posi diff, 3.50:1
gearing and performance street axles. Foose 'Classic Nitrous II'
polished wheels (18x8.5"F/20x10"R) mount new Toyo Proxis Z-rated
radials. The fully restored undercarriage is equipped with power
steering, 4-wheel SSBC Performance Disc brakes and Wilwood master
cylinder w/Hydo-Boost power booster. Other upgraded components
include: reinforced frame, rack/pinion steering, tubular A-arms,
f/r sway bars, custom driveshaft and lowered (2") rear springs.
Overall, this retro Impala Super Sport is a performance stunner
that must be driven to be appreciated. ALL VEHICLES SOLD "AS
IS".
