Vehicle Description
This 1940 Ford Deluxe Business Coupe is the ultimate in EVERYTHING.
It has a cool moonshiner story; a no expense spared amazing
restoration; and a thoroughly modern heart beneath this very
vintage skin. So dig onto all the details on this award-worthy
build.
Moonshiner cars were all about being sleepers, and this one does
exactly that. Even the subtle rumble of the exhaust doesn't give
away the modern machine beneath the classic sheetmetal. And this
one really earns its outlaw heritage. Its tale is this was bought
new in North Carolina, and it was a genuine moonshine runner. It
had to be hidden away in 1970 because of this bandit history. The
coupe would spend the next 35 years in the barn until being
resurrected for restoration. This even comes with the 1956 title in
the moonshiner's wife's name! But once it was pulled from the barn
this went for a proper nut-and-bolt restoration. The exterior
respects the moonshiner nature by just looking like an
exceptionally presented classic. The all-steel body panels have a
precision fit that look better than when this left Ford's factory.
The black paint is a high-gloss application that you see on a
highly respected classic. Every piece of trim is complete: from the
full-length brightwork line, to the Ford Deluxe badging. In fact,
the only real exterior hint that they weren't trying for just a
painstakingly accurate classic coupe are the addition of the
polished Cragar SS wheels.
When you open the door, you lose any last idea that this is a 1940s
machine. After all, they didn't have tan leather bucket seats back
then that were this plush and power adjusted to your ideal comfort
position. This color is nicely coordinated on the dash, carpeting,
added rear seat, and custom door panels. The large trunk that makes
this a terrific liquor running machine has now even been finished
to match the custom interior. This is a high-style setup with great
details, like crisp Classic Instruments gauges and the wood trim in
the dash and banjo-style steering wheel. Plus, you now have all the
best in modern conveniences, like power steering, power windows,
power locks, tilt steering column, and an AM/FM/CD stereo w/CD
changer. And the air conditioning is blowing nice and cold, so you
can feel as cool as you look behind the wheel.
There are a ton of terrific upgrades to this coupe, but the best
one starts under the hood. This is ready for modern moonshining
with a 5.7-liter LS1 V8. This powerhouse neatly tucks into the
engine bay, so you can really wow everyone at the car show with
this fuel-injected surprise. It even has all the right supporting
components, including headers and an aluminum radiator. Plus, the
transmission was upgraded to a 4L60E four-speed unit that's an
ideal pairing to an LS motor to deliver both confident downshifts
for performance as well as smooth overdrive cruising. Don't forget
to check out the undercarriage photos. This classic Ford body is
now riding on a full custom chassis. The suspension is a tubular
A-arm front, adjustable coilovers, and a Heidts Pro-G Jaguar-style
rear. That's right: this now has fully independent suspension! You
even have four-wheel disc brakes (with the rear ones inboard.) So
you can amaze everyone by literally running circles around younger
cars!
