The perfect Shelby Cobra tribute to drive and enjoy
The magnificent 1983 Aurora GRX Cobra featured here is finished in stunning deep red over a black leather interior. This Cobra tribute is one of approximately 175 examples built by Aurora Cars Limited in Ontario, Canada between 1981 and 1983. These hand-assembled cars took over 450 man hours to build and featured a tubular steel space frame with fully independent suspension as well as four-wheel disc brakes. The Aurora Cobras were U.S. DoT safety compliant in addition to meeting EPA emissions requirements. They were sold new through select Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealerships throughout the U.S. and Canada. Their construction enlisted quality materials with Smiths instrumentation and Connolly leather. The “slab side” 289 Cobra body was constructed from fiberglass using a mold that was created from a real 289 Cobra. The quality craftsmanship, attention to detail and retro appeal evident in the Aurora Cobra attracted numerous affluent clientele and was accompanied by an asking price of more than $35,000 when new (the equivalent of over $90,000 today)! This particular example is largely original and displays only 12,739 miles on the odometer. Power is delivered from a reliable Ford 5.0 liter V8 which is shifted through a four-speed manual transmission resulting in comparable performance to the original. As a factory assembled automobile, the Aurora represents a rare market opportunity to acquire a turn-key tribute that was fully U.S. complaint when new and thus has a 17-digit VIN for ease of registration. We are proud to offer this example to the most astute collector, investor or enthusiast who appreciates quality construction and the legacy of the Shelby Cobra. Classic cars have proven to be among the most resilient and rewarding investments in recent years with the Historic Automobile Group Index (HAGI) jumping 39% in 2013, 16% in 2014 and 17% in 2015 while posting gains of 467% over the last 10 years.
