Vehicle Description
By 1991, the C4 generation of the Corvette was in full swing with
no end in sight. Because the C4 received many updates over the
years, the first and last year models are almost completely
different cars. When comparing the last of the C4s to the first of
the C5s, it is very apparent in what direction the Corvette was
headed. 1991 is right in the range of C4s sought after by many, as
some consider them the perfect transition to bring the Corvette
from the 1980s into the 1990s.
This 1991 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has a lot of great things going
for it! From condition to performance, there is nothing to dislike
about this vehicle. The exterior is in excellent original
condition; exactly the condition one would expect for a 44,000 mile
car that has seen nothing but care and maintenance. Sitting on a
set of original sawblade wheels, this C4 is straight out of a
Nintendo 64 video game. The paint and body are both in excellent
condition for the age of the vehicle. While you may find a minor
chip here or there, this ZR1 is not in the condition of a vehicle
that has been ridden hard and put away wet. This car has escaped
tacky modification and extreme abuse, perhaps due in part to being
a ZR1 and not just a "regular Corvette." The only notable change
that has been made is the addition of an aftermarket exhaust system
which sounds great and fits the look.
The interior is in equally maintained condition with minimal
defects and wear consistent only with casual, infrequent use (and
the manner in which one must insert themselves into a C4 'Vette!).
Additionally, the interior is the gorgeous bright red leather that
was available. Not much looks better than a red on red Corvette! It
is hard to believe that this car was only the beginning of the
1990s; it looks much more advanced than 1991! The seats are
comfortable and everything works as it should. All interior systems
appear to be functioning properly, and aside from driver's seat
bolster wear (see above: squeezing into a C4) is nearly immaculate.
If you haven't driven one of these before, a neat and subtle
feature is a keyed switch used to set the car to either full or
reduced engine power for valet/teenager/brother-in-law use. You can
set the car to reduced power and remove the key, making it
impossible for an overzealous operate to abuse the full power of
this car!
Under the hood is where things really start to get interesting!
While it is equipped with 5.7 liter (350CI) LT5 V8, this is not the
engine found in a "normal" Corvette. This is an aluminum block V8
with 375HP-roughly 50HP more than the standard Corvette 5.7
produced. Designed for GM by what is now Lotus Cars and
manufactured by Mercury Marine, this aluminum performance engine is
a work of art. This engine is hooked up to a six-speed ZF manual
transmission. Make no mistake, this is a finely tuned, highly
researched and well thought out car-serious bang for your buck!
Other ZR1 specific upgrades include the enormous 315/35R17 rear
tires, ABS, and the Low Tire Pressure Warning system. Another
seriously cool (and very advanced) technology feature is the FX3
suspension system. This is an adjustable suspension system
engineered by Bilstein that allows for ride dampening changes at
the push of a button. Talk about being ahead of its time!
This is an uncommon Corvette, in a dynamite color combination
packed full of fantastic options. As you can tell from all the
research and development from various companies that went in to the
development of the ZR1, this is no simple Corvette. It's a ZR1!
Remaining in great overall condition, this would be the perfect
addition to a Corvette collection or for use as a fun and
affordable weekend car.
