Vehicle Description
1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible
After the Firebird, Camaro and the Mercury Cougar entered the pony
car class in 1967, AMC got in on the action in '68 by introducing
the Javelin. The pony car class was hitting what would become its
best years, and all cars were now introduced except the Dodge
Challenger, which would come in 1970. The pony cars were riding
high in 1968 and would continue to do so for a couple of years,
though the 1970s would soon bring rising insurance rates, more
government regulation and less consumer interest in the class.
For consignment, a matching numbers version of the 350ci 4-barrel
HO with a 4-speed Muncie manual transmission, and in convertible
form. A very limited number of these cars were produced with these
options. A very nicely preserved, clean version of the 1968
Firebird.
Exterior
With laser straight exterior steel panels with just a hint of some
rust starting, the consigner states that the adornment of Solar Red
is from 1978, and it holds up very well. Chrome, trim and brite
work is very nice with virtually no pitting, dimpling or rust. A
white HO side stripe can be seen running along the belt line as
well as stainless rocker trim and wheel well brite work, all good
here. A pristine white convertible top with a rear plastic window
is clear, and scratch free. The top is operated with the flick of a
switch and moves up and down flawlessly. The distinctive Pontiac
identity starts with the front grille with a wide peripheral front
bumper, strong vertical center and horizontally mounted dual
headlamps. A full width rocker molding with 6 vertical louvers are
on the front of the rear quarter panel, just behind the doors.
Bringing up the rear is a protective wrap around bumper, louver
style taillamp, and chrome edge strips that house the backup
lights.
Interior
A Black custom (Pontiac's words) Deluxe interior in knit Vinyl
Strato Bucket seats, flank a wood appliqud center console which
races from the back seat, all the way up to the dash. A 4-speed
shifter is within this console, as is a storage glovebox. An
aftermarket 8-track tape player sits on top behind the shifter, and
the center panel of the dash sports the same burl faux wood
appliqu, with the original radio and climate controls. The
instruments are inset into a forward raking dash and have a conical
design for easier reading. Chrome trimmed foot pedals float above
clean black carpet with rubber floor mats.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and we are greeted by the beautifully restored
350ci V8 with a 4-barrel Quadrajet carburetor atop, and a 4-speed
Muncie manual transmission. A color correct light blue block,
chromed valve covers, and a near perfect air cleaner atop the
4-barrel, with all shiny supple rubber hoses, belts, and wires. No
corrosion here kids!
Undercarriage
A structurally sound frame is jet black as are the floorpans, and
wheel wells. A little denting and dinging on the panel below the
bumper, and covering the gas tank area is also noted, but mostly
unremarkable.
A great example of an unrestored survivor with one repaint in 1978,
and its numbers matching. As Pontiac's advertising said at the time
"Here its 1968 and you've never played wide-tracking? Maybe you're
not a great American Sport" Although Wide-tracking will never be a
spectator sport...obviously.....Queue the smoky voiced deep
throated announcer!
