For Sale: 1970 Mercury Cougar in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

From evil '60s Trans Am racers to Le Mans-winning GTs, the Ford camp has always offered a full portfolio of unique cars and fabled powertrains. And in the world of specialty pony cars, it doesn't get much more powerful or exclusive than a 428 Eliminator. If you can find a documented Cougar Eliminator that's been correctly restored and has all the right hardware, you can get a righteous, investment grade classic with a positive value curve that never seems to end. And if you've ever dreamed of owning a rare pony car that mixes a storied drivetrain with choice options and a solid restoration, you've clicked the right link!

NO COMPETITION

The beneficiary of a professional, ground-up restoration that utilized many original and NOS components, this slick cat features a correct layer of vivid Competition Blue 2-stage that's highlighted by traditional Eliminator war paint. Take one look down the sides of the car's stylish body and it becomes obvious that great care was taken to ensure every panel is aligned to better-than-factory standards. Step closer to that body's brilliant pigment and check out glossy surfaces which, according to this Mercury's restorer, are the product of mostly original sheetmetal. Grab the pivotal pieces of that well-adjusted sheetmetal and experience great fit that's right at home reflecting a summertime car show. Then step back to admire one well-done classic that celebrates almost 50 years of all-American cool!

The top option for Mercury's already upscale Cougar, the Eliminator backed proven Ford power with some of Dearborn's best styling. At the leading edge of this slick coupe, a squared spoiler frames ornate parking lamps, a guarded bumper and a streamlined blackout grille. At the top of that grille, a Satin Black scoop leads fresh glass that's framed in straight stainless and body-matched mirrors. At the sides of that glass, bold "ELIMINATOR" callouts join traditional door handles to provide an aggressive yet finished appearance. And at the back of the car, a tall wing shades intricate taillights and a second chrome bumper.

COBRA JET POWER

Hoist the hood and you'll find 428 cubic inches of legendary, numbers-matching V8 that looks as fresh as the day it rolled out of the restoration shop. Long regarded as one of the meanest MoTown mills ever created, Ford's fabled Cobra Jet utilized revised heads, heavy duty Le Mans connecting rods and a nodular iron crank to ensure blue oval pony cars remained the kings of stoplight muscle. At the top of the Ford Blue mill, a stainless-capped air cleaner shoots wind through a big Holley carburetor. At the sides of that carb, finned aluminum valve covers shade restored exhaust manifolds. In front of those tubes, a correct points distributor sequences fire through pliable Autolite Radio Resistance cables. Below those wires, reproduction Autolite hoses circulate water through era-correct screw clamps and a beefy FoMoCo radiator. And items like an Autolite breather, an Autolite voltage regulator, an Autolite rev limiter and factory smog equipment add an increased level of detail and value!

COUGAR-LIKE REFLEXES

Take a look under this awesome Merc and you'll find clean, Red Oxide floors that have been grazed with bright Competition Blue overspray. Just aft of the legendary V8, a numbers-matching Toploader 4-speed spins a tough 9-inch axle. A factory-spec suspension centers correct power steering between factory drum brakes. In the middle of the car, an aluminized, true-dual exhaust system funnels spent gases through an H-shaped crossover and throaty turbo mufflers. And at the edges of the car, power meets pavement through Cougar-branded Magnum 500s and F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas Custom Wide Treads.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CONTRAST

Between the doors, a correct White Clarion Knit Dcor interior features correct Hi-Back vinyl seats that, in honor of their pre-restoration appearance, have been upfitted with stylish black appointments. In front of those seats, a symmetrical dash founds rebuilt factory telemetry next to correct 8-track audio. Below that dash, a factory console floats a traditional Hurst shifter opposite pick-free door panels that front correct power windows. And the driver spins an ornate, wood-trimmed steering wheel.

As one of Dearborn's coolest combinations of performance and style, well-restored Eliminators present excellent opportunity for savvy investors. That opportunity is substantially increased when the car's history and authenticity are so thoroughly documented. Mixing a correct restoration with a storied drivetrain, this incredible coupe is an ideal candidate for rounding out any serious collection.
