The "KR" in Mustang Shelby GT500KR appropriately stands for "King of the Road." The original version of this mighty muscle car, which made its first appearance in February 1968, was a product of Ford and Shelby American, the latter being the name of the company owned by legendary high-performance vehicle designer and builder Caroll Shelby. Ford paid a fitting tribute to the Shelby GT500KR by releasing a special-edition 40th-anniversary version in 2008. Ford produced a total of 1,000 GT500KR models for 2008, followed by 571 in 2009 to match the total 1968 production run of 1,571 units. Complex Rides ranked the 2008 Shelby GT500KR at #17 on its list of "The 100 Best Mustangs of All Time," stating that, in addition to being fast, "it has a presence that demands respect."
