Vehicle Description
The Chevrolet SSR was a fascinating experiment the likes of which
we may never see again. It handles like a Camaro, capable of
hauling real stuff like a pickup, and has a folding hardtop like a
European roadster. And while these already had tantalizing low
production numbers, this one has some of the most desirable
features of them all - the larger V8 and a six-speed manual
transmission!
This 2005 Chevrolet SSR is one of those nicely preserved examples
that has obviously led a very good life in the hands of those who
appreciate a unique machine. Now that over a dozen years have
passed since production concluded, we can really begin to
appreciate how the SSR blended the iconic Advance Design pickups of
the 40s and 50s with modern fender flairs and aggressive stance. In
fact, it's hard not to recognize all the unique lines of this retro
machine thanks to the bold factory Slingshot Yellow. Its deep
luster is just another reminder of the good care this SSR has
received over the years. And dark details like the full-length
black pinstripe and gunmetal gray wheels really stand out against
the vibrant paint.
With just the touch of a button, the folding hardtop disappears
behind the seats. This reveals the black leather interior, and
let's face it, there's arguably no better combination for a bold
total package than black and yellow. And more than just look
sporty, this has all the right performance-oriented features for
both the new and vintage lovers. For example, the dual bucket seats
with a waterfall of color in-between reminds us instantly of the
first-generation Corvette, and the grippy steering wheel has all
the right modern fingertip controls. All of this look terrific
today because this SSR has been treated with respect since day one.
This also means that the long list of features is still in perfect
working order. It includes keyless entry, power locks, power seats,
and cruise control. Plus, the stereo has been upgraded to a Pioneer
AM/FM/CD unit with a touchscreen. While the covered and locking bed
is large enough to carry really big stuff, it's beautifully
finished with carpet and wood. In fact, it's really just an
extremely spacious trunk. Plus, a modern classic means modern
safety features like dual front airbags, side airbags, and ABS. But
the feature we think you'll like the most is the power windows.
Combined with the power top, it means you never have to leave the
driver's seat to go from coupe-like luxury to a wind-in-you-hair
experience. And since this has cold-blowing factory air
conditioning, you can take the top down all year long without
breaking a sweat.
While all SSRs are V8-powered, not all were created equal. During
the limited run, a later model like this received the 6.0-liter LS2
V8. This fuel-injected powerplant was shared with the Corvette, and
it represented more than a 30% upgrade in power over the previous
year. In fact, the rare six-speed manual versions like this one
were a little more powerful than the automatics. So, you get extra
muscle and full control over it, too! As you look at the
undercarriage photos, you will not only spot a clean presentation,
but also all the right components for a great handling machine
(rack & pinion power steering, independent front suspension, wide
Goodyear rubber, sway bars, modern bracing, ventilated four-wheel
disc brakes, etc.) So, this is the kind of future classic you'll
enjoy driving near or far.
Complete with owner's manual, this is the most collectible
late-model Chevy around. It's fast, fun, and unique. Now is your
