With all the talk about Hot Rods, Horsepower, Handling, and Speed,
there is almost no room left for just plain old cruising. There is
something to be said about hopping in a huge automobile, dropping
the top, and going for a drive. Remember the Sunday drive? Whatever
happened to that tradition? When gas was cheap, and big metal was
plentiful, what better way to spend an afternoon?
For consignment a boulevard cruiser, long and lean, convertible and
cool, this '68 Caddy remains in nice condition, with a few
blemishes, plenty of leather to grab you when you sit in, and a
nice working convertible top. It has the big, big, V8 under the
hood to get that mass up to speed in a hurry, and a smooth TH400
automatic transmission to save a little gas, but then who cares?
You are showing up in total style, with a car from an era where
success was measured by the inch.
Exterior
Regal Silver, a very befitting name for this luxury status symbol.
It covers straight steel panels, that are minding their gaps,
(mostly) except for a few small pieces are out of line on the front
grille and rear taillight section, and shows a few blemishes here
and there, but overall nice paint exists. A contrasting Black
convertible top looks fab when it's up, and feels fab when its
down, and it works perfectly. Chrome and brite-work is in good
condition with just slight areas of the beginnings of fading, and
minor dimpling. Chromed wire wheels with Cadillac logo covered
hubs, medium wide whites, and you are screaming classy all the
way.
Interior
It just doesn't get any better than this with a sea of Red buttoned
leather on the split front bench with a large armrest divider, and
full on rear bench. Add a matching tonneau cover, side door panels
with a smattering of wood grained vinyl, and chrome, and a
mind-boggling array of buttons, toggles and knobs to run all the
conveniences like power locks, power windows, power seats, climate
control, and a toggle side view mirror. All this floats in the red
sea if you will. The carpet, which presents nicely, and is very
clean, is covered in rubber mats at each station. A shout out to
the trunk where everything is in original and very clean order,
well done!
Drivetrain
The big 472ci V8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor to feed it, all
clean and in great condition sits in a very nicely preserved engine
bay. This healthy mill is backed by a TH400 3-speed automatic
transmission.
Undercarriage
Underneath we can give a thumbs up to very little surface rust, and
a covering of rustproofing. Frame, floorpans, suspension parts, and
rockers are all in great shape under here. Even under the inside
door panels are squeaky clean. Noted are power drum brakes all
around, and a 2.94 rear, and a nice clean exhaust system.
Purchasing a classic can be frought with pitfalls, because let's
face it, an older car will have maintenance to do. This Caddy
though, is in really nice condition for its age, has a nice
respray, is rust free, and mechanically sound as per our tests. So,
go ahead, pull the trigger and start your own parade down main
street, you head turner you.
