For Sale: 1951 Lincoln Cosmopolitan in Palmyra, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

This rare vehicle is a show stopper in its Radiant Green Metallic paint, Yellow Leather interior and Green Hartzcloth top.  One of only 850 built, this car was the 137th vehicle off the Dearborn assembly line on November 17, 1950.  Manufacturing data and color combination is verified by the Body Number Code 16-86-103-17-L-137 for VIN # 51LP8226H#.

This car has been in my family for over 40 years and underwent restoration at my father's Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Sunbury, PA.  The car is totally complete and authentic down to the glass windshield washer bottle.  It has correct fender skirts that have not been installed.  As an older restoration, the paint is not perfect and there is a small repair in the top canvas.  It received new authentic tires last year when the cooling system was also flushed.

The Lincoln Cosmopolitan was the first fully redesigned automobile after World War II (1949 model).  The Cosmo was the first Ford car with an automatic transmission (purchased from GM) and with a curved glass windshield.  Ford used a huge 357 cubic inch flathead V8 truck engine in the car which was modified for the Lincoln with hydraulic lifters.

The car has working hydraulic seat, hydraulic windows, and hydraulic top.  It is equipped with clock, radio, power antenna, heater, courtesy lights, etc.

The car attracts a huge amount of attention at shows with its brightly colored interior that resembles two living room leather sofas.  Many have questioned the authenticity of the colors which have been verified to be correct but are found in no other known Cosmopolitan.  A nationwide survey conducted some years ago by a collector concluded that there were fewer than 25 of these models still remaining.  About one auction sale has been recorded every other year with the highest price for a perfect specimen being $137,500 and the average reported price just under $79,000.  To allow some room for refreshing the restoration, we are asking just $49,500.  The photos shown here are recent and should reflect the current condition of the vehicle.
