Vehicle Description
1965 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III
Before the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, Rolls-Royce was seen as a
manufacturer of luxury cars for English aristocrats. The purchasing
choices of a number of celebrities produced a change in the
perception of the Rolls-Royce brand, with the result that it picked
up new potential customers. This was a huge boon because gaining
access to new segments of luxury car consumers opened up a lot of
new possibilities for the luxury car manufacturer. Something that
continues to have an important impact in the present day. Elvis
bought one in 1960, which was in addition to other Rolls-Royce cars
that he had bought. Likewise, both Frank Sinatra and John Lennon
are known to have bought Rolls-Royce Silver Clouds as well.
Unsurprisingly, these purchasing choices had an interesting impact
on the choices of other consumers in the luxury car market.
For consignment, a straight, body repaired, resprayed, now
rust-free car from 1965. This was the last year for the Silver
Cloud III, so one could say the last year to see the Rolls in its
classic design form. Some would say old and outdated, I would say
when you have something that works keep it going, but alas things
ultimately changed.
Exterior
A very tasteful Tudor Gray respray covers the exterior. Chrome and
brite work are very nicely preserved, and the iconic large grille,
and this year flanked by dual headlights in oval nacelles. The
Spirit of Ecstasy tops off the radiator and fronts the long hood.
We are still using folding side cowlings in lieu of a hood, so we
need to access each side to see the engine. The rear with its very
spacious passenger compartment, and space to lease out trunk, will
hold almost anything for the long haul.
Interior
With red leather hides on the seats and padded door panels, with
the seats showing some wear, and cracking, this car has a definite
patina to the interior. The rear bench is in a bit better
condition, but still showing patina. We need to make note of the
beautiful hand selected burl that trims the upper door panels and
makes up the front of the long dash. A slight bit of crazing can be
seen throughout on the finish of the burl. Also, rear passengers
can have a fold down tray which is also covered in the burl. Red
Wilton wool carpeting covers the floors and appears in good
condition. A felt headliner is tight, and original. Power windows,
dual climate controls, a radio and an 8-track player are in the
dash, along with the usual gauges and knobs.
Drivetrain
Upgraded (from the 6 cylinder) ...a factory V8 6.2 Liter with 2 SU
carburetors feeding it that puts out a nice power range as you are
taken through the automatic gears in the 4-speed transmission.
Undercarriage
Nicely done with no visible rust, surface or otherwise, either
through remediation or covering with undercoating, none is seen.
4-wheel drum brakes are noted.
A last year of generation III of the Silver Cloud, this one has
been brought back with no rust, and mechanically sound. A mere 2
owners, and the second one states he only put 200 miles on this
car, you are sure to get around in all the best of British motoring
style. I say....
