Vehicle Description
Merely referring to this 1931 Ford Model A Roadster Pickup as a
rare find is a bit of an understatement. Vintage Fords from this
era are hard enough to come by and locating one in this particular
configuration is especially difficult. Factor in that this Model A
is also in unusually clean condition - thoroughly refurbished both
in and out and within a stone's throw of undisputed show quality -
and it puts into perspective what a proverbial needle in a haystack
this classic really is.
A close examination of this beloved antique will reveal that it's
been revitalized with plenty of skill and precision. Take a lap
around it and you'll notice just how nicely its body panels blend
together as they transition from cabin to bed area - no small feat
with a car that first debuted more than 85 years ago. A smooth coat
of deep green paint, accented by tan painted stripes, is draped
over the exterior and it really presents well - even when parked
indoors, the shine it carries is evident. The full size spare tires
mounted on each side of the vented hood originally took their place
to provide a measure of preparedness during real world driving on
roads that were often unpaved, and in this setting they add a very
nice finishing detail. A canvas manual convertible top rests at the
back of the cabin, ready to be called into action should the skies
darken, and like everything else on the car, it's in great
condition and fits like a glove, also offering an impressively
clear rear window. For the most part, this Ford classic sports a
monochrome, color matched look, but what chrome that is on board -
particularly on its front bumper and headlight rings - is looking
sharp.
Nicely refurbished, the interior on this '31 is another strong
feature. Its bench seat is clad in fresh, dark tan vinyl with a
tuck and roll pattern, and there are plenty of cool details on
display to admire inside this vintage cockpit. The seating is
bracketed by nicely detailed door and kick panels showing intricate
stitching and ultra clean surfaces. There really isn't any sign of
wear to be found, a strong indication that this venerable ride has
logged little time on the road since its restoration. In back, the
bed area sports freshly prepped wooden slats interspersed with
color-matched steel tie-downs for a great, finished look. The
original steering wheel is still perched on the column and has been
brought back to top form, as has the dash area just beyond it, with
its smoothly coated steel surface and clover-shaped instrument
cluster featuring functional gauges.
The thoroughly period correct drivetrain this Ford carries is
running in surprisingly solid form. It's anchored by a 201 cubic
inch flathead 4 cylinder engine that springs into action quickly
for a vintage powerplant and it combines with a 3-speed manual
transmission that shifts without issue. One of the decided
advantages the Model A held over its predecessor was its ability to
maintain a reasonable speed, and while you're not likely to be
testing the 60 mph limit that was advertised in its heyday, rest
assured that this '23 is very much up to being driven. A definite
head turner, it cruises on a set of newly refurbished 4.75 /5.00-19
spoked wheels wearing new tires. Below, a thoroughly detailed and
painted undercarriage provides yet another example of just how
painstaking this restoration was.
