Vehicle Description
1961 Cadillac Series 62
What is the Cadillac mystique? - over two tons of steel, chrome and
fancy trim crafted into a sleek, stylized version of an airplane
that cannot fly, but can do practically everything else. GM
states..." We appeal to people who want the best," "We've noticed
that when we have fuel problems or the economy is not doing well,
people become very quality conscious - not price conscious."
Cadillacs were restyled and re-engineered for 1961. The new grille
slanted back towards both the bumper and the hood lip along the
horizontal plane and sat between quad headlamps. New forward
slanting front roof pillars with non-wraparound windshield glass
was seen. The revised backlight (rear window) treatment had crisp,
angular lines with thin pillars on some models and heavier,
semi-blind-quarter roof posts on others.
Exterior
Best described as a cruiser that is most comfortable in the low and
slow mode, the exterior is covered in matte black. Chrome accents
abound and show pitting and rusting in areas of the bumpers, and
brite work. Toned down but ostentatious rear fins, announces to
everyone you have arrived, and you are large and in charge! With
its large chromed dish wheel covers, rear fender skirts, curved
greenhouse glass, and the iconic fins, this car gives off a look
that is reminiscent of the Bat Mobile.
Interior
Shabby chic best describes this unrestored interior, with original
leather seats showing tears, staining and soiling, door panels that
are smudged and loaded with power actuators, and ashtrays somewhat
dulled, and a nonexistent headliner, the interior is a bit rough.
The dash is original and unrestored.
Drivetrain
A 390ci V8 graces the original patina engine bay and is topped with
a single 4-barrel recently rebuilt carburetor. A TH400 automatic
3-speed automatic transmission is strapped to the back of this 390.
A new generator, starter, power steering pump, belts, and master
cylinder are some recent upgrades made to this engine.
Undercarriage
Plenty of heavy surface rust, and some invasive rust on a section
of the frame render this car in need of some structural repairs.
New front and rear shocks and springs, new brake shoes and drums
all around, and new front strut bars, as well as a recent front end
alignment will assure those new tires will last a good long
time.
A menacing but interesting cruiser in its long, finned and uber
chromed form in reasonably good exterior shape, and in need of a
redux interior, mechanically sound with recent upgrades, and some
rust on the frame condition. Grab this car and put some finishing
touches on her and you will be one of the coolest Caddy drivers
around!
