Last of the Flat Rads: 1954 Morgan Plus 4
This 1953 Morgan Plus Four is an early “flat radiator” car that’s registered as a ’54 due to its original sale date. Early 1953 saw this grille design changed to one essentially identical to that still used by Morgan today, making this car likely among very last built with the flat radiator type, free standing chrome headlights and twin upright spare wheels.
Under the bonnet is one of the last built with the 2088cc Standard Vanguard engine and Moss gearbox with 26,695 original miles. The motor and transmission have never been rebuilt but the rest of the car was completely gone through and rebuilt from frame up including a rebuilt tub from Bonnets Up in 1988.
The exterior is finished is the original ivory color with a red leather interior. Inside the cockpit is the original English walnut dashboard, Smith instruments and “Banjo” style steering wheel. Pattern was cut from the original top and tenneau cover and replaced during restoration. The car remains in good condition and driven regularly around Sullivans Island, SC.
