Few cars in the history of American motoring have been as
consistently good as the Camaro. Where some of their rivals took a
misstep or two, Chevrolet did all they could to ensure the F-body
remained a stylish and affordable performance platform. The updated
fourth generation F-body was produced by Chevrolet from 1993
through 2002 and would retain the same basic characteristics since
the introduction of the first generation in 1967: 2 Doors, 2+2
seating, coupe or convertible body styles, rear-wheel drive and a
choice of push rod V6 and V8 engines. This particular 1999 Camaro
is one of only 832 Bright Red cars produced with the extremely
desirable SS Appearance and Performance package. The superb
condition and minuscule mileage provide evidence to the care taken
by the original owner, who carefully adored this automotive work of
art for nearly 17 years of ownership.
Ordered new at Jack Cauley Chevrolet in West Bloomfield, Michigan,
this already potent Super Sport was then equipped with some
enhanced performance from SLP Engineering. The car received SLP
Performance exhaust and was equipped with the Castrol High
Performance lubricants package. The SLP exhaust adds an ominous
growl to the smooth-revving, legendary LS1 powerplant lurking
underneath the sculpted SS hood. To authenticate the SLP products:
the SLP door sill decal is present and the original SLP
documentation is included with the car. The original vehicle order,
invoice and Camaro sales brochures from time of purchase are also
included.
This showroom-spec beauty has covered a mere 5,931 actual miles
since new. The smooth body panels are draped in a glossy Bright Red
2 Stage paint over a luxurious and sporty Dark Grey Leather. The
interior of this stunning SS appears as pristine and well-cared for
as the exterior. Desirable comforts like air conditioning, power
windows and door locks provide the driver additional comfort while
engulfed in the 6 way power driver's seat. The optional SS
appearance package included more menacing exterior styling with the
aggressive SS hood, 5 spoke SS wheels and attractive SS rear
spoiler.
AutoWeek reviewed the Camaro Z28 SS in 1998 and summed up their
experience with the following statement: "It's never been better
than this. You can't call any automobile the best anything without
accounting for personal taste. With that reminder, we'll get to the
point: Some folks at AutoWeek will tell you that the 1998 Camaro
Z28 with the SS package is the best muscle car ever made."
Looking back on the long history of the F-Body, there's little
doubt that this 1999 SS is one of the most enjoyable Camaros of all
time. It exhibits the best of everything from one of the last
authentic pony cars, and it's the perfect fit for any serious
collector who loves showroom-spec muscle. Buy the car and stash it
away for a few decades, or take it out and enjoy every second of
one of the best eras of automotive performance!
