Shelby's GT350 was joined by the big-block GT500 in 1967, both bearing custom body pieces for the first time. Both cars returned in 1968 with even more assertive front-end styling that has become a hallmark of the GT500 brand. Shelby number 541, this 1968 GT500 Fastback is one of 1,044 built that year. A desirable factory 4-speed car, it was sold new at Horn-Williams Motor Co. in Dallas. As it had the previous year, the GT500 once again got the Police Interceptor 428 CI big-block V-8 modified with a 715 CFM Holley four-barrel carburetor on an aluminum intake manifold and dressed with finned aluminum oval air cleaner and valve covers. The engine and surroundings are faithfully detailed and include correct smog-control equipment, Autolite battery, hoses, clamps and spark plug wires. A 4-speed manual transmission, power steering, power brakes, Tilt-Away steering column, Philco push-button AM radio and sport deck rear seat are also factory-correct features. The Black Deluxe Mustang interior reflects Ford's increasing influence on Shelby's GT, combining user friendliness with high-level trim: a two-point roll bar, shoulder harnesses, special instruments and wood-rimmed steering wheel; the late Carroll Shelby's signature on the passenger-side sun visor is a treasured special touch. The car's sharp Acapulco Blue Metallic paint and White Le Mans stripes confer a distinctly racy look that is maximized by Goodyear 350 White-letter bias-ply tires and Kelsey Hayes 10-spoke wheels. An older restoration performed to factory specifications, the car remains in outstanding condition. It is also highly documented with the original Shelby Automotive invoice, Shelby order form, build sheet, original buck tag and Marti Report.
