The Z1 design was headed by Dr Ulrich Bez who used the transmission and engine from the E30 325 2.5 litre, 170hp, 6 cylinder. The body is GE plastic and the tub (frame) was made by Baur. The most distinctive visible feature of the car are the drop down doors that create the ultimate "open car" experience, but the remarkable design of the aerodynamics is incredible. The entire underbelly of the car is covered by a flat composite undertray which is designed to smooth the airflow to the rear to avoid negative lift at highway speeds.
This car is #7823 of 8000 produced and believed to be the first fully federalized Z1 in the US. The car was always in a climate controlled garage since we owned it. All service records were kept in a binder for reference since 2008. Recent service completed: timing belt change, coolant flush, NEW water pump, thermostat, alternator v-belts, spark plugs, throttle body gaskets, engine bay fuel hoses and radiator. Also has a new old-stock muffler/tailpipe which is designed to be used as a wing to keep the back end of the car in control. It also has Bilstein shocks, matching green BMW mats, plus tires have low miles. Top is in great condition, tool kit, spare wheel, no spare tire. Wheels were refinished at a highly recommended local wheel shop. It was converted from km to miles at a speed shop in Palo Alto (Speedometer INC.) where the mileage was verified. We have the documentation from the speed shop.
Provenance: Karl-Helmut Steiner brought it into the US in 1993. He was a Professor in Berlin and a German hotelier and owned hotels on South Beach in Miami. Karl was found brutally murdered in Jamaica in 2008. I have much documentation to back up this story. This car was also in the Movie Miami Rhapsody with SJP, Antonio Banderas and Mia Farrow. It is sitting in front of a Hotel on South Beach, which I am speculating was Karl's Hotel, when they are strolling down the street. We will include the movie poster and other details about the car with purchase.
This car has won numerous concours events and was featured in several magazines. Also BMW Blog did a test drive in our car Aug 2010 and posted to their site 30 Aug 2010. It has a clear Pennsylvania title and May 2019 Pennsylvania State Inspection has been completed. Also has a clean Carfax.
In conclusion, this has been a fun car to drive and gains much attention when arriving at events.
