Kar Kraft number 2306, this 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 is one of just 89 factory finished in glowing Calypso Coral paint. Part pony car, part muscle car, part homologation special, the Boss 429’s initial purpose was to homologate the new 429 CI V-8 for NASCAR, but hot on the heels of the 1968 Cobra Jet Mustangs, it represented new Ford president Bunkie Knudsen’s second shot at translating the company’s many weekend racing successes into Monday morning sales. When Knudsen assigned special projects manager Roy Lunn to wedge the imposing engine into the Mustang, Lunn turned to his old friends at Kar Kraft in Brighton, Michigan, who performed the trick by reconfiguring the Mustang’s front suspension, widening the track by .08 inches – barely enough to take the 429’s width. Moving the battery to the trunk saved more space, and helped offset some of the engine’s 635-pound bulk. KK 2306 is equipped with its original matching-numbers 820-T 429/375 HP Boss engine, RUG-AZ Ford top loader 4 speed matching numbers transmission and 3.91:1 Traction-Lok rear end. Competition Suspension, power steering and power front disc brakes were all standard, as were chromed Magnum 500 wheels and Goodyear Polyglas GT tires, the Deluxe Décor interior, 8,000 RPM tach and a Philco AM radio. A four-owner car since new, it has been driven 43,961 miles and was kept by the previous owner from 1999 to 2014. He began a restoration on the car in 2007 and completed it in 2010. Interestingly, the late King of the Kustomizers, George Barris, autographed the car while appearing at a show. This rare and very attractive “Boss 9” is documented with two factory build sheets, the shipping invoice, Marti Report and the original manufacturer sticker from the door.
