Vehicle Description
1969 Dodge Charger R/T SE
During the early-1960s, automakers were exploring new ideas in the
personal luxury and specialty car segments. Chrysler, fast to enter
the specialty car market, selected their Dodge Division to enter
the marketplace with a mid-size B-bodied sporty car to fit between
the "pony car" Ford Mustang and "personal luxury" Ford Thunderbird.
The intention was to create a fastback look while sharing as much
existing company hardware as possible. The Coronet-based Charger
that resulted" was introduced in mid-season of the 1966 model year
"in retaliation to the Rambler Marlin, Ford Mustang, and Plymouth
Barracuda".
Beautiful beyond words from just about any angle, the 1969 Charger
styling is arguably one of Chrysler's shining moments. A full
restoration with color change, and a few minor changes to the trim,
as well as a beefed-up carburetor, and we have a shower and a goer
in this version of the Charger. By the way R/T refers to road/track
(no "and" in the middle) which was a higher performance package,
and SE is an upgraded trim package that included wood steering
wheel and dash, leather inserts in the seats, and chrome rocker
moldings. R/T SE.
Exterior
Born with Gold Metallic paint, it is now bathed in Lemon Twist
Yellow, and shows nicely. A black vinyl sports top with "flying
buttress" type C pillar supports culminating on the rear in pointy
style emulating a fastback but sans window. Another sporty feature
added after manufacture, is the transverse stripe wrapping itself
around the rear, and showing the R/T logo in yellow knockout type.
15 x 7 chrome magnum wheels are seen on all 4 corners, as well as
hidden headlights up front in the split grille, and chrome tips
peeking from the rear of this very nice muscle car.
Interior
A swing of the door and it reveals the R/T SE promised wood
steering wheel and dash with a smattering of wood within the center
console that runs from dash to rear of buckets. The dash presents
very clean, and the tri spoke chrome supported steering wheel is
unmarred. Buckets show a square button stitched pattern and are
leather inserts with vinyl bolsters. The rear bench has the same
theme, and door panels show very nicely as well. A fairly tight
headliner has a few stretch marked areas at the end of the pointy C
pillars but is in very nice condition. Slightly faded black carpet
is noted on the hump, and front has yellow logo Charger floor mats
above the carpeting.
Drivetrain
A 440ci Magnum V8 (with a stamping E 440 1 3 HP2) is topped with a
new 6-pack carburetor set up that can throw massive amounts of
fossils and air into the engine at once and produces 375hp. A
blasted rust-free exhaust manifold can be seen and also noted is
the completely restored engine bay. A numbers matching A727 3-speed
automatic Torqueflite transmission is attached to the rear of the
mill. This throws power back to an 8.75 rear.
Undercarriage
Very clean and pristine with no surface rust, new exhaust, perfect
floor pans and solid as a rock frame. Bottom of doors at rockers
are rust free as well. Power drum brakes are all around, and a
torsion bar front suspension and rear leaf spring suspension can be
seen.
Overall a very nicely presenting muscle car from Chrysler ca.1969.
A color change, rear transverse stripe and a six pack to the top of
the engine, and you are ready to do some smokkin' of the tires. Can
you say doughnut?!
