Vehicle Description
Initially introduced for the 1964 model year, the Pontiac GTO is
often considered to be the car that started the muscle car
movement. An affordable price tag with slick modern looks and big
power made for a performance vehicle like no other! Though other
automakers soon jumped on the muscle car train, the GTO beat nearly
everyone to the punch. For 1965, the GTO received its first
restyling creating one of the most iconic muscle cars of all
time.
Finding a GTO convertible for a reasonable cost these days is quite
a challenge, especially if it is a real-deal PHS documented GTO
like this one. That's right, this GTO convertible is a verified
GTO! No clone here! But wait, there's more, this is also a factory
4-speed, factory black interior car. Though it was originally
burgundy, this car is currently finished in a stunning coat of what
appears to be either Montereo Red or Victory Red. The current color
really draws your attention to the unique styling and aggressive
look these GTOs have! Additionally, a light colored top has been
installed in lieu of the original black; the correct choice to
stand out against the current paint color. This car is clean and
straight, and was restored with no shortcuts.
The interior is the correct black vinyl, and is in excellent shape
all around. The pattern on the seats is unique to Pontiac and is
one of the more aesthetically pleasing designs available during
this time period. Everything has been put back factory correct, and
when sitting behind the wheel one could easily be fooled into
thinking it was the 1960s again. All wear items are in good
condition showing minimal use; a sure sign that this GTO has been
properly cared for since it was restored.
Under the hood sits a Pontiac 389 V8. This engine runs great, and
is the perfect OEM power choice for a GTO convertible. Given how
well the engine runs and the lack of smoke, leaks, and other
ailments suggest this engine has been rebuilt in the not-so-distant
past. This 389 is a correct, 1965 335 horsepower block and is
believed to be the original for this car. Originally equipped with
a 4-barrel carburetor, it has been switched over to a factory
Tri-Power setup. Despite anything negative you may have heard about
Tri-Powers, this car is set up right and runs like a champ! The
4-speed transmission received a new clutch kit in 2016, and shifts
just the way it should.
Included with the sale are copies of the PHS documents proving this
car's pedigree, as well as both Protect-o-Plates and the original
owner's manual. If you're in the market for a real-deal, factory
4-speed GTO convertible, you won't want to miss out on this
beautiful specimen! This Pontiac is an example of what the original
muscle car was intended to be, and they certainly aren't making any
more of them. Whether you want a classic weekend cruiser, or
another collectible American icon for your collection, you won't
want to pass this GTO by!
