For Sale: 1965 Oldsmobile 442 in Tuolumne, California

Vehicle Description

This car will make an Oldsmobile lover out of anyone. This genuine 1965 442 is a rare 4-speed Cutlass Sport Coupe (post). It has been with the same owner for the last 30 years, during which it received a full ground-up restoration. The resulting car is beautiful inside and out, top and bottom.

1965 was the year the 442 came into its own. It had been previously rushed into production for 1964 with a modest 330 cubic inch motor. But in 1965 Olds went to their 400 cubic inch motor with its beefy 440 ft-lb of torque as the standard 442 power plant, helping set the stage for GM's larger displacement motors.

This particular car was built in Lansing, MI. It maintains its original cowl tag with the correct 4-V code (unique to 442 cars). The thorough restoration included new parts throughout, including cabin and trunk floor sections to eliminate any rust areas. The car was repainted in its original color of Target Red. Bumpers were straightened and re-chromed to a brilliant shine. All the correct 442 trim, emblems, and side scoops are present.

This 442 has a nicely rebuilt 400 cubic inch motor from 1965. Build highlights include a 0.030" overbore, oil restrictors, bearing cap support straps, and forged pistons. Up top are Edelbrock aluminum heads (the original rebuilt cast heads are included). The valve train uses an Engle cam with hydraulic lifters, chrome-moly pushrods, and roller rocker arms. The induction setup uses an Edelbrock intake manifold with a Holley carburetor (650 cfm), while the exhaust uses beautiful ceramic coated Hooker headers feeding Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers for a great muscle car sound. There is also a new 4-core radiator.

The engine is backed by a Lakewood scatter shield housing a Centerforce II pressure plate and clutch. The Muncie M21 4-speed transmission shifts perfectly through a Hurst Competition Plus 4 shifter. Note this is a factory 4-speed car with a console. The 12-bolt rear end is hung with a complete Hotchkis suspension including a monster anti-sway bar. The front suspension and power steering were also redone, as were the 4-wheel drum brakes.

The interior was beautifully redone in its original color of black. It is truly in mint condition throughout. The seats, carpet, door panels, headliner, dash, console, and all trim pieces look excellent. Additional features include Mooneyes tach and gauges, which are really nice classic touch. The original radio and revolving ashtray are present as well.

The early 442's represent the beginning of the muscle car era. They are beautiful cars that offer something different from the usual Chevelles and GTOs. Combine that with this car's very high quality and you've got something special indeed.
