HISTORY OF THE LOTUS ESPRIT S4S
The Lotus Esprit S4 was first offered in 1993 with stylistic changes penned by Julian Thomson which included revised front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a new rear spoiler. Additionally the S4 was the first Esprit to offer power steering. The S4 Sport, or S4s, was unveiled in 1994 and utilized Thomson’s stylistic improvements with the addition of a rear wing from the 300. The 2.2 litre engine was enhanced with improved head flow, a new ECM and revised turbocharger that resulted in 300hp. The S4s was capable of nearly 170mph and a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds. The S4s first came stateside during the 1995 mid-production year and only 145 were built for the U.S. market while the V8 powered cars were unveiled for 1996. With such low production, the single turbo 4-cylinder versions have become a commodity among 1990’s sports car enthusiasts as well as collectors.
