Vehicle Description
This is the kind of truck that you fall in love with at first
sight. You just know how cool you'll look at the car show as the
only one to show up in a 1938 International D-2. Featuring a strong
350 V8, A/C interior, and custom bed with incorporated exhaust
stacks, who knew that being different could be this darn cool?
Make no mistake, this is a full custom build that comes from a
singular vision and a serious investment. The D-2 was still new on
the scene in 1938. It had a cool Art Deco design, flowing fenders,
and a rounded split-window cab. This was a perfect platform to
start this fantastic custom build on. It entailed removing the
front bumper, lowering the stance, and setting it all on sinister
Ambassador wheels form Detroit Steel Wheel Company, staggered with
an aggressive 17/20-inch front/rear size. And speaking of that
bespoke rear, the custom flat diamond plate bed (featuring an
aftermarket removable cargo-carrier that's currently installed on
it) and high exhaust stacks pay tribute to International's
commercial roots and will be the coolest place to hold a tailgate
party. The whole truck was expertly sprayed with a shade of black
that has a touch of matte for a sinister effect that won't lose its
sheen, and that paint beautifully contrasts when up against the
chrome grille and ample shiny bright work. While this is a true
unique custom build, International was relegated to third place in
truck sales for 1938, so you'll be hard pressed to see another D-2
anywhere you go, let alone one this cool.
Inside is a full custom interior that retains much of the
International's workman charm but is now updated with modern
conveniences like R134a A/C and an AM/FM/CD player mounted into the
headliner. And speaking of the headliner, notice the unique
patterned vinyl and incorporated International logo, a design that
is mirrored in the sharp-looking door panels. The black bench seat
does a great job of coordinating with plush black carpet, adding to
the simple yet upscale look and feel of the cab. Slip behind the
leather-wrapped Lecarra sports steering wheel that sits atop an
aftermarket tilt steering column, and peer at the full set of
white-faced Dolphin gauges. The dash is utilitarian and sleek,
augmented with an A/C vent panel and Fi-Tech control pad attached
underneath, and the glove box conceals the controls for the air bag
system. This pickup is built to comfortably get you to your
destination, and to do so in style.
Under the hood is a fine replacement for International's
six-cylinder, because you now have a trusty Chevy 350 V8 that
quickly snaps to life thanks to a Fi-Tech EFI system. With more
than just good and reliable power, it has reliable components like
an aluminum radiator and electric fan, so this big rig stays cool
even in traffic. But that's the practical side. What you really
want to know is how the headers feed the glasspacks before exiting
out of those tall stacks, combining for a mean street rumble. Oh
yes, this one has some serious presence with its appearance and
sound. It also sits so sinisterly low when parked thanks to
adjustable airbags in the rear. On the road the D-2 feels nice due
to an independent front suspension and trailing arm rear, likely
borrowed from a muscle car era Chevy. Add in more great driving
features like the TH350 three-speed automatic transmission, power
steering, power front disc brakes, and the grip of modern Lexani
tires, and this a cool looking custom rig that can easily take the
long haul.
