Vehicle Description
1962 Chevrolet Impala SS
The 3rd generation Impala ran from 1961-1964 and would end up being
one of the most important American cars to date. These were the
game changing years in which the Super Sport and the world famous
409 engine were released. The SS Impala played an integral role in
formulating what we now know as the original Muscle cars.
Here in the corridors of the Classic Auto Mall we have all kinds of
cars with all kinds of purposes. Some classics to be shown, others
to be driven, and others to do both. Here we have a classic that
exemplifies early muscle cars. It is to be driven and can be shown
with a little bit more work mainly on the exterior. Read on!
Exterior
From its chromed bezel dual headlight flanking egg crate grille,
and lower wrap around bumper, to the aluminum machined pattern
spear at its belt line, and the dual sets of three taillights
within more aluminum trim, and lower bumper, this car sports plenty
of nice brite-work, and chrome to feast your eyes on. Wrap around
chrome window surrounds, and cursive "Impala SS" badging with the
galloping impala in a circle, and the crossed flags 409 badge on
both front quarter panels shines brightly against its Code 923
Roman Red base coat. Several areas on this car show paint bubbling
or interacting with whatever is underneath it as it shows
throughout this paint job. Otherwise, we see fairly straight steel,
with gaps that are fair. Typical Chevrolet stock wheel covers are
all around this car.
Interior
As we swing open the 1 of 2 doors on this coupe, we are met with
more red vinyl with square pattern stitching, and chromed "buttons"
if you will, delineating the squares. A curved thin molding
separated these squares from a horizontal ribbed pattern below and
imbedded throughout are the near perfect handles for window
cranking, and door opening. As we move inside 2 nicely restored
buckets, framed in chrome flank a center console that is very thin
and shoehorned between the buckets, and reaching no further than
the seats. Directly in front is the Hurst shift lever, and a cross
flag emblazoned metal plate. Very nice thick pile carpeting covers
the floors, and a rear bench in same pattern is across the back
with iconic rear speaker between the top of the bench-style seats.
A near perfect dash with original gauges plus a few aftermarket add
ons, helps keep track of all the vitals. An original steering wheel
in very good condition fronts the dash. Last but not least, a clean
white headliner is above and is neat, pleated, and tight.
Drivetrain
The original 409ci V8 has been replaced with a period correct 409
but is not numbers matching. Needless to say, it still boasts a
consigner stated 450Hhpwith its dual 4-barrel carbs and Edelbrock
chromed oval air cleaner with filter. The engine presents
beautifully and has an "orange" (red if you will) block, gold valve
covers, and could not be cleaner. A 4-speed manual transmission is
bolted on back.
Undercarriage
Power disc brakes are noted now on all 4 corners, and they sit
within a mostly rust free structure, of black steel, although few
areas of rust through are noted in photos. Rockers are solid as
well as floorpans and toe kicks. Mostly sound with a few areas
repaired or noted.
Overall save for the paint issue which is really unknown to its
exact cause by our experts here at Classic Auto Mall, this car
presents very nicely, and goes like a rocket ship. With its period
correct engine, with some upgrades, nice interior, the exterior is
but a minor distraction overall when looking at or driving this
car. A fine example of early muscle that is on a few steroids.
