Vehicle Description
This truck gets the job done. Big, strong, killer look; this 1976
Ford F-250 Highboy is ready to work, play, or just take you just
about anywhere you want to go, thanks to 4-wheel-drive and a
great-running, fuel-injected 390 big block V8 under the hood.
Handsome good looks don't hurt, either.
I don't know about you, but we think that bright red paint job has
the right look for a Highboy and it works really well on the
truck's neatly creased sheetmetal, which has benefited from
spending time under the warm Texas sun. Still showing some of the
'60s detailing but with a forward look that would stay with Ford
for a generation, this '76 is a neat example of the evolution of
the pickup truck. The front chrome clip it sports now was borrowed
from a '78-'79 model, but we love the larger headlight set-up and
the grille insert is one of Ford's simplest yet strongest designs.
It's been repainted and the bright red looks great and it's always
the right choice on a vintage pickup if you're looking to attract
attention. It's got a nice shine and luster and glistens when going
down the road. Also note the embossed trim that runs from nose to
tail on each side, the chrome wheel well moldings, and the
oversized mirrors that are great for pulling a trailer and give it
an old-school heavy-duty look. The chrome bumpers are new (get a
look at that big-boy out back!), the stainless has been properly
maintained, and a full plastic bedliner and toolbox means that this
hauler is still ready to do some work when it's needed. But you'll
definitely think twice before you get this one dirty.
The black interior with durable vinyl upholstery doesn't stray too
far from this truck's working-class roots, and that's OK. That's a
fresh replacement seat cover and it works well with the painted
interior and simple door panels. The rest is a nice blend of
original and aftermarket, including the stock 3-box instrument
panel and three auxiliary gauges installed to the left of the glove
box. The aftermarket AM/FM/Bluetooth head unit in the center of the
dash powers the subwoofers behind the seat, and if you want to
share the boom with the crowds, pop open the sunroof and let
everyone jam out. The transmission is an automatic on the column,
so it's easy to shift into position and relax, and the floor lever
in the center controls the 2-speed transfer case so you really can
go just about anywhere with it. There's also a wrapped original
steering wheel for further comfort, but it blends in pretty well
and doesn't detract from the vintage look. Overall, the truck
retains its OEM flavor, but extra comfort and convenience items
like the heated seat (that's right!), power locks and remote start,
truly make it a pleasure to drive.
The engine is a freshly rebuilt, burly 390 cubic inch V8, and the
engine bay looks incredibly clean and detailed, especially the
engine itself, which wears fresh Ford Blue paint. There are a lot
of new components that help with both performance and reliability,
including a FiTech fuel injection system that sits atop the intake
manifold, plus new tune-up parts everywhere you look like the plug
wires, coil, and distributor cap. A motor this size needs to stay
cool, and the huge aluminum radiator with twin electric fans does
exactly that. An open element chrome air cleaner gives it a sporty
look that's right on a big block like this plus a dual exhaust
system with Flowmaster mufflers sounds suitably powerful. The
aforementioned C6 automatic and transfer case power a set of
heavy-duty axles, including a durable rear-end out back, so you
don't have to worry about breakage. The chassis is like the engine
bay, original but in very good condition while showing off its
southern roots, and with the beefy 4x4 suspension, it does look
heavy-duty enough for anything. Shiny polished aluminum wheels
certainly help with the showstopper look, as do those giant
285/75/16 all-terrain tires that really set it off.
Vintage trucks are red hot, offering V8 power and practicality you
can't get anywhere else. Complete with restoration photos to back
