Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1981 BMW E21 323i / Alpina
C1 2.3. We have known this car for over a decade and can document
its history to new. It was purchased new by an American IBM
employee while on international assignment in the South of France;
he drove it in Europe for five years before returning to the U.S.
and bringing the car with him in 1986. It was eventually passed
down to his son and later sold to a fellow IBMer and BMW enthusiast
(and friend of Motorcar Studio) who enjoyed it for several years
until the current owner's purchase in 2015.
This Alpina is finished in Sapphire Blue metallic and shows 158,000
miles. This is a dealer Alpina package car based on a 323is and was
optioned with the Alpina wheels, spoilers, gauge cluster, badging,
shift knob and steering wheel when new. Polaroid photographs from
the car's early life in France (dated 1986) accompany the sale and
show this example in largely the same appointments - the Alpina
stripes are a later addition.
The current owner had the engine completely rebuilt by an Atlanta
BMW specialist in 2016. Additional recent service includes
suspension, brake overhaul and tires. A six-cylinder 323i with Euro
bumpers is rare enough in the U.S. as we only got the four-cylinder
320i here, but finding an Alpina version with a known, documented
history is even more difficult.
Factory tools, matching Alpina spare, service records dating to
1990 and import documentation are included with the sale. A great
driving car that gets attention wherever it goes. For more
