Vehicle Description
1981 Mercedes Benz 240D
Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 four-door executive car in
January 1976 to replace the W115. The overall dimensions and
wheelbase were lengthened, and styling was updated to a less
angular more contemporary look. The new look included round head
lights with inboard fog lamps in all models except the 280 and 280E
which had large rectangular headlights. Later the European models
were all changed to the rectangular headlights. North American
models retained the round complement. In 1980/81 the carbureted 280
was replaced with the fuel-injected 280E. W123 introduced many
innovations in both safety and styling including ABS brakes,
retractable steering columns and airbags for the driver.
This Light Ivory Mercedes is an outstanding all original survivor.
The interior looks like it has never even been driven and still has
that distinctive "new Mercedes leather" smell to it. The 4-speed
and diesel combination make this a smooth driving classic that
could be daily driven. The value on the iconic W123 Mercedes body
type continues to go up, especially on a survivor like this.
Exterior
Light Ivory in good condition with very little fading, only seen on
MB logo on front grille with some blue missing within the letters.
Chrome is all in nice condition with no pitting or rust. Door close
with the MB "thud" as expected, and headlights, signals and tail
markers are clean and clear.
Interior
Palomino in MB Tex is covering all the seating surfaces and door
panels. Interior is in excellent condition, dash instrumentation is
clear and clean and all functioning, and original. A 4-speed manual
transmission, air conditioning, cruise control, power brakes
(4-wheel disc), power locks, and an upgrade to a Becker sound
system (cassette) has been dealer installed. Carpeting is pristine,
and headliner presents in very good condition. The trunk has
carpeting too and is clean.
Drivetrain
A 4-cylinder fuel injected 2.4 Liter OHV engine, is mounted in the
original engine bay (unrestored and good). As noted, the 4-speed
manual transmission (shifted on the floor) is mounted to the back
of the diesel mill.
Undercarriage
For as far as the eye can see, miles of rust-free metal, and
quality heavy build parts. Mercedes is known for their over
engineering, and it is plenty evident under here.
A very clean original condition 58,000 mile car and based on its
condition I personally would believe it. A chance for someone to
have a nice classic daily driver, where its only downfall is slower
acceleration with the fuel efficient and bullet proof diesel. But
hey you have to give something to get something, and you can always
change your shift points on the RPM dial!
