For sale: Pure British Roadster Fun. Classic attention-getting lines and authentic sports car enjoyment are all rolled into this frame-off restored 1959 Triumph TR3A.
This car began its rebirth in the mid-1990s with a full restoration by the previous owner that included installation of a rebuilt larger displacement TR4 engine. Beautifully painted by a hot rod shop in a custom eye-popping red, it has been meticulously maintained ever since.
This TR3 is being sold by the current owner who has enjoyed it for 15 years, driving it locally for seasonal car club tours. Since restoration, it has spent its entire non-road life in a climate controlled garage. It is rust-free.
The TR4 engine is 2138 cc, 105 bhp, inline 4 cylinder with twin SU carburetors. It is mated to an original 4-speed non-overdrive TR3 transmission, which means it does not have synchromesh in first gear. A full stop is required to avoid grinding first gear. Gears 2-4 are synchromesh. However, the buyer of this car will have the opportunity to purchase - in a separate financial arrangement - a five-speed Toyota transmission and an original still-in-the-box HVDA conversion kit for a TR3. (These kits were designed and sold by the late Herman van den Akker and are no longer available from HVDA.) Please note that this transmission and kit are NOT being sold with the car and are NOT included in the selling price of the car. However, the buyer of this car will have the first chance to purchase the transmission and installation kit.
While the transmission has not been upgraded, this car has benefited from several other improvements in recent years including an upgraded water pump, puller type electric fan, hi-torque starter motor, and an alternator with conversion to negative ground. The conversion to an electric fan required the use of the kit that eliminated the mechanical fan and included the installation of a narrow drive belt. This makes the car ready to convert to a bolt-on rack and pinion steering system, which is NOT included with this car, but is readily available from suppliers. This TR3 currently has the original steering mechanism, which works well.
Also being sold with this car, but not installed are LED tail lamps and turn signals. Please note that the original parts (starter, mechanical fan, and generator) are included in the sale which would allow the new owner to return the car to its original stock condition if he or she chooses.
Included with the car is a like-new convertible top, convertible top frame cover (hood sticks cover), tonneau cover, side curtains and a side curtain bag, Brooklands racing screens (shown in one of the photos) a TR3 tool kit, spare parts and service manuals. Some parts and service records are available. The car was recently inspected and tuned by a professional mechanic. It starts and runs very well.
In the interest of full disclosure, the paint has a few very minor re-touched stone chips and one small dent in the lower right rear quarter panel (see photo). The front fenders are fiberglass, although it is very hard to tell without a magnet. This car, like all Triumphs leaks some oil, though not excessively. It does not burn oil. The engine and the entire car are in excellent running condition.
While this car has won many car show awards, it has always been first and foremost a car that is meant to be driven. The new owner should not be afraid to drive this car. That’s what classic British roadsters are meant for. And this one does it very well.
