Vehicle Description
If you're like most gearheads, you know all about the days when
Carroll Shelby helped Henry Ford II whip Ferrari at Le Mans. That
said, as time progresses, technology progresses. And a product that
once existed just as an innovative sports car perfected by a
legendary racer has now birthed a hyper-competitive,
multi-million-dollar replica market. Today, it takes a serious plan
and highly skilled craftsmanship to even think about sourcing or
restoring an original GT40. But when it comes to authenticity, it
doesn't get much better than this incredible Shelby GT40 85th
Commemorative Edition. One of only 85 cars commissioned by Shelby
American, this FE-powered beast combines storied heritage with
killer looks, excellent build quality and unbeatable performance.
And, since it's listed in the Shelby Registry, the Shelby GT40
Registry and the Superformance GT40 Registry, this investment grade
sports car is virtually guaranteed to remain an all-American
icon!
40 INCHES
It's likely that the extreme, purpose-built nature of the GT40
doesn't really occur to most people until they see one up close. At
just 40 inches tall, the driver is more or less lying in the
cockpit rather than sitting. And that low-slung profile, combined
with the car's buckled down nose and sawed off tail, creates one
wicked looking classic!
One of the biggest selling points of the Shelby GT40 85th
Commemorative Edition is authenticity. The car is so close to its
Le Mans-winning forebearers that roughly 2/3rds of its components
can be interchanged with an original Mk II. Both cars use the same
dimensions, employ the same stamped steel roof design and cross the
scales at roughly the same weight. Where they differ is the simple
fact that Commemorative Editions utilize much improved
electro-galvanized steel, which is sure to look great for decades
sporting this car's official Gurney/Grant paint scheme. That livery
is detailed to its fullest, with bright Quick Lifts, Olthoff
canards, period-correct fuel fillers and a period-correct spoiler
complementing a requisite Gurney bubble. Naturally, all
commemorative cars received plenty of stylish Shelby branding, with
Shelby-etched door handles joining official Shelby emblems,
Shelby-etched headlight covers and specific Shelby decals.
Streetability has been optimized with modern lighting, a modern
wiper, polished mirrors and pop-out side windows. And this coupe's
one owner has been meticulous about both care and maintenance,
opting for a glass rear window, applying 3M protection to
vulnerable paint and even installing custom Lexan skid strips under
the car's nose.
KEEP YOUR SHELBY ALL SHELBY
If you're going to buy one of the best sports cars ever created,
why not pair it with one of the best engines ever created? Enact
this GT40's Olthoff clamshell kit and you'll find 468 cubic inches
of aluminum Shelby FE that twists 559 dyno-proven horsepower into
603 lb./ft. of straightaway-scorching torque! That CNC-machined
block, both stronger and 45% lighter than traditional iron, gulps
air and fossils from 58mm Borla throttle bodies that are threaded
to braided stainless lines and quality AN fittings. A reliable FAST
ECU dumps a choice air/fuel mixture into aluminum Shelby Medium
Riser heads, which are dressed in powder-coated Shelby valve
covers. Beneath those heads, a 4340 crank pushes custom Mahle
pistons and forged H-beam rods to create stout 10.5 to 1
compression. Above that assembly, a custom hydraulic roller cam
bumps custom aluminum rocker arms behind a billet accessory drive
and quality Cloyes double-roller timing components. The fires get
lit by a hot MSD distributor, which sequences sparks between loomed
Roush plug wires, an MSD Blaster 2 coil and MSD 6AL ignition.
Cooling comes courtesy of an aluminum, cross-flow radiator that's
wired with dual SPAL puller fans. Speaking of fluids, lubrication
is handled by a high-volume oil pump. And ceramic coated 'bundle of
snakes' headers join a polished breather, polished reservoirs, ARP
bolts and poly motor mounts to convey this Shelby's extreme level
of detail.
AUTHENTIC MADE BETTER
It cost almost $180K to roll this GT40 out of Shelby American's
possession. On top of that, the owner installed a $68K drivetrain.
So then, it only made sense to go ahead and bite the bullet and
ship the car to Voss Performance of Placentia, California for a
little over $21K of fine tuning. Bottom-side, an original-style,
steel monocoque rides an original-style, fully independent
suspension. Finished with color-keyed powder-coating, an Olthoff
over-engine sway bar and adjustable QA-1 shocks, that suspension
has been augmented with an electronic front lift. Turns come
courtesy of manual rack-and-pinion steering. Stops come courtesy of
four Wilwood calipers, which are cooled by powder-coated brake
ducts. Behind the incredible engine, a McLeod hydraulic racing
clutch bumps an RBT-sourced ZF 5-speed. All that proven track
prowess rolls on 15-inch Halibrand-style wheels, which twist
painted stainless spinners inside two 225/60 Avon radials and two
295/50 Avon radials. And the car's roster of precision parts is
topped off by 10-gallon stainless fuel tanks.
UNDER THE BUBBLE
Naturally, this Shelby's insulated interior is every bit as nice as
its bright red shell. Pop the car's Hartswell-secured doors and
you'll find original-style bucket seats that stretch upgraded
leather surfaces under authentic grommets and sturdy Willans belts.
In front of those seats, a matte dash hangs original-style Smiths
telemetry between pushbutton ignition, a Speedhut GPS speedometer
and a sequential GT40 85th Commemorative Edition plaque. At the
bottom of the car, "Carroll Shelby" branded carpet bridges the gap
between an adjustable pedal box, door-mounted air conditioning and
a small console that frames an Olthoff-upgraded shifter. And in
front of the driver, a leather-wrapped Moto-Lita steering wheel
laps a detachable hub.
With impressive performance, classic looks and incredible
provenance, this pristine coupe provides unmatched exclusivity.
Combining storied Shelby design with brutal FE power and 21st
century build techniques, it's a virtually new, highly authentic
example of one of the most desirable sports cars ever created.
Don't miss this opportunity to own a spotless, turnkey GT40 that's
almost as rare as vintage, and probably more fun to drive!
