Exterior Color: Grenadier Red Interior: Black Vinyl Engine: 1969
GTO 400 Transmission: M 20 4 speed wide ratio Miles: 72855 (Current
Odometer Reading) In 1964 the management of Pontiac worked around
the General Motors mandate that mid size cars could not have an
engine that exceeded 330 cubic inches. Pontiac offered the 389
cubic inch engine in the mid size Tempest as part of an option
package. The GTO option package included a 389 /325HP engine, 3
speed manual transmission with a floor mounted Hurst shifter, sport
suspension, wide wheels, GTO emblems, dual exhaust, and two chromed
non functional hood scoops. Other options available with the GTO
package included a 4 speed transmission, tachometer, a 3
carbuerator intake system and a sports steering wheel. Management
felt confident that they could sell 5000 Tempests with the GTO
option package. In fact 32,450 Pontiacs were sold in 1964 with the
GTO option package and the muscle car era was born. Other
manufacturers quickly scrambled to offer a car using the same
formula ( mid size body & chassis with a large displacement engine,
upgraded transmissions and heavy duty suspensions) This Grenadier
Red 1964 GTO is one of the best examples of Pontiac's first year
GTO that you will find. We have the Pontiac Historical Society's
report confirming that this car came from the factory with the GTO
option package. A Frame Off, Rotisserie Restoration was completed
in 2016. We have pictures and receipts for much of the work. New
floor pans, trunk pans and rear quarter panels were installed. The
frame was stripped and repainted. All new suspension components
were installed. The Brake system was completely refurbished with
new brake lines, drums, pads, and master cylinder. The steering box
was rebuilt, and a new gas tank was installed. A new dual exhaust
system, that has a nice muscle car sound, adds the finishing touch
to the chassis. A 1969 GTO 400 was rebuilt and topped off with a
1965 Tri Power system, and mated to the orignal M20 wide ratio 4
speed transmission. The safe-T-Track (Posi) 3.23 rear end was
restored The floor pans were covered with a heat and sound barrier,
and new carpeting was installed. The black vinyl seats were rebuilt
with new foam and seat covers. A new headliner was also installed.
The Hurst shifter was restored and a center console was installed.
The body was repainted with a 2 stage paint in Grenadier Red. All
of the original chrome and stainless moldings were polished and
reinstalled. This GTO has a day 2 appearance with Cragar SS wheels,
a Sun Super2 column mounted tachometer, and a hidden modern sound
system. For more information please call West Coast Corvette Car
