For Sale: 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia in Monterey, California

Vehicle Description

This 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is in the desirable combination of Bahia Red with Black.

The Karmann Ghia is a sports car marketed in 2+2 coupe and 2+2 convertible body styles by Volkswagen. Internally designated the Type 14, the Karmann Ghia combined the chassis and mechanicals of the Type 1 (Beetle) with styling by Italy's Carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built bodywork by German coachbuilding house, Karmann.

Practical and stylish, the Type 14 had an engine displacement that grew concurrently with the Type 1 (Beetle), ultimately arriving at a displacement of 1584 cc, producing 60 hp, such as out subject.

Long noted for its exterior styling, the Karmann Ghia was designed with input from numerous individuals at Carrozzeria Ghia and was strongly influenced by Virgil Exner's work. American industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague included the Type 14 Karmann Ghia in his list of the world's most beautifully designed products. Production doubled soon after the Karmann Ghia's introduction, becoming the car most imported into the U.S.

Our subject car is presented in Bahia Red paint over Black vinyl interior. Showing 86k miles on the odometer, this sharply dressed VW has lived an easy life, most recently with a meticulous doctor in Monterey, California.

Exterior

Records show that the car was repainted in correct Bahia red – still showing vibrancy from the respray.

Correct Hella brand headlights and driving lights can be found along with scratch-free door windows, back glass and windshield. Both front and rear glass rubber surrounds are new and perfect.

Bumpers and brightwork throughout are very nice and free of significant pitting or scratches.

Star Lite Sport metric tires are mounted and virtually new over the correct 15” steel rims. Tires have over 80% of tread left.

Fitment and door jams are considered acceptable, although the back decklid could use some adjustment.

Interior

Door pockets, carpet, visors and headliner are all new replacements and in excellent condition.

Steering wheel is period correct, commonly wrapped in the weaved vinyl. Horn button is free of any cracks and operates an intended.

Gauges are bright and clear and work properly – even the clock and fuel sensor.

A Retro Sound modern stereo is installed along with small speakers on the lower kick panels.

The dash is a reproduction replacement in excellent condition.

Engine

Recent receipts on the motor from February of 2019 include:

o   Valve Adjustment

o   Replacement of Rotors

o   Reset Timing

o   Replace all Fuel Lines

o   Rebuilt Fuel Pump

o   New Wiper Blades

The Test Drive

We were able to test drive the car in and around town as well as some back local roads. The car pulled straight and true after an immediate crank over on a cold start. Brakes were checked and performed well under stop and go traffic and on steep downward hills. The 1.6-liter engine does date itself in terms of performance but does wake up on long straightaways and keeps up with traffic. The 4-speed gearbox shifts fine and easily into the gear you’ve selected.
