Vehicle Description
It's one of America's - and likely the world's - most beloved
classics and a full restoration to concourse status has brought it
back to top form. This 1966 Ford Mustang GT Convertible just
radiates quality - it was once owned by a president of the Mustang
Club of America, so you know it's spent a lot of time in front of
discerning company and it features just the super sharp appearance
it would take to meet the approval of such a tough crowd.
As a GT, this '66 rolled off the line already equipped to impress,
and it still wears its rich-looking original burgundy shade with
trademark white GT stripes running the lengths of its rocker
panels. It's just such a clean looking car - that darker backdrop
sets it apart from most of the classic Mustangs you see on the road
and that distinctive paint sits over very solid sheet metal - you
won't find any telltale waviness signaling that bondo lies just
beneath on this ride. When it came time to reassemble its
well-prepped body panels that, too, was done with care, so the
lines on this classic are very precise. The GT fog lights
bracketing the corralled running horse emblem up front, as well as
the chrome exhaust tips peeking out from the rear valance come part
and parcel with this Pony's GT status and they, as well as the
badging and chrome trim throughout, are also in top notch shape. A
clean white convertible top sits below its tonneau cover, ready to
rise up for protection from the elements.
The black vinyl interior has been refurbished to its original
deluxe Pony factory specs and it really looks clean. The front
buckets and rear bench seat sport those instantly recognizable
upgraded accents on their backrests and their ultra-fresh covers
reflect the light usage they've seen since their installation.
Climb inside and you'll be surrounded by all those hallmark GT
features - among them the center console, with its fresh woodgrain
inserts that match those on the instrument panel and glove box
door, all of which are in top form. A pair of rally pack gauges is
perched on the steering column, just beyond the woodgrain steering
wheel and just in front of an assembly of factory gauges that all
function as intended behind their crystal clear lenses. Factory air
conditioning wasn't all that common back in the mid-'60s, but it's
on board here and it's certainly a welcome feature for frequent
driving. In back, the trunk area is in just the well-detailed
condition you'd expect from the rest of the car.
Over the decades, Ford's 289 cubic inch V8 proved itself to be one
of the most trusted motors ever to take its place inside a classic
and true to form, the example here is running great. It wears a
stock 4 barrel carb underneath a chrome air cleaner and sits in a
very tidy engine compartment - there's no grime anywhere inside and
every hose and wire looks freshly cleaned. The engine has been
dressed up with a pair of period-correct Cobra valve covers and
pairs with a 3-speed automatic C4 transmission that offers precise,
slip-free shifts. Power brakes that feature a period-correct master
cylinder and calipers for the front disc brakes provide plenty of
stopping ability, while power steering makes this classic easy to
navigate. A set of immaculate 14" Magnum wheels with red centers
and wrapped in suitably vintage whitewall tires provides just the
right finishing touch.
This 1966 Ford Mustang GT Convertible is a sterling representative
of its model in all of its open-air, thoroughly restored glory.
