1 of 1,542 442 W-30's built in 1970 The 455 was booted up to 365
standard horsepower, and the optional W-30 package upped that
number to 370, adding a fiberglass hood with functional ram-air
scoops." Muscle-car experts have long contended that the actual
horsepower was 30-40 horsepower greater than publicly rated due to
cost-prohibitive insurance rates at the time. To most muscle-car
aficionado's, the 1970 442 W-30 is the most coveted Oldsmobile ever

plate. The main shift pattern was your usual PRNDL set up where you
placed the lever in Drive and let the transmission valve body do
its thing automatically. Reverse and Park were the only diversions.
The shift pattern was on the lazy side with medium line pressure
and fairly low shift points for easy, smooth driving. To the right,
a separate gate which had to be maneuvered into manually with the
car at a standstill was the fully manual shift pattern. Placing the
lever at the very back at 1 for first gear, you rocketed off at
full throttle and hung in there until you were near the redline.
You grab the lever and punch it forward to 2, A hard snap and mini
explosion out back with barking tires told you second gear had
arrived. It often felt like a kick from an angry mule. You repeated
the performance for 3 which placed you in Drive and sent you well
above the speed limit and ready for a trip to county jail. The
shift pattern had more line pressure and necessitated a hard launch
and shift near the red line for maximum benefit. If you wimped out
and only got on the throttle part way without engaging kick down,
the shifter doesn't come through. It is all or nothing!
