Vehicle Description
1966 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
"Herzlich willkommen"
The Ghia had come into existence when Luigi Segre (Ghia's
commercial director) had been asked by Karmann to design an "image
car" for Volkswagen. Following Europe's recovery from the effects
of WW2, VW had a reputation for building reliable, small and
efficient cars, however they wanted to break into new markets and
for this they needed a car that would captivate the general public
in the same way as the Ford Thunderbird, or the Chevrolet
Corvette.
The 1966 Ghia saw the engine increased in size from the 65, this
time to the 1500cc unit similar to that from the Type 3, often
considered as one of the best VW engines ever produced. The
electrics were now 12v rather than the previous 6v system. A
redesigned dashboard features new instrument displays, a faux wood
dash cover with a smaller version of the insignia featured on the
deck lid, the heater controls are now housed on the dash as opposed
to the floor as previous models.
This Ghia has been fully restored from head to toe. It is a hard to
find a 66', there are maybe only a handful for sale in the country.
(Rust Free, no leaks, perfectly restored vehicle.)
A LOT of time and detail was put into restoring this car. It is has
a lot of insulated-sound proofing-anti rusting materials. It has an
after market radio with aux and a cigarette lighter for cell phone
charging. It has a rebuilt transmission and engine with only 702
miles (at time of posting) on it. The engine was rebuilt to have 2x
the power and 2x mpg as stock, and it also has fuel filter. Almost
everything is fully functional. It has an after market A/C
installed, to keep cool in the hot AZ summers. It can be used as
daily driver, weekend car or show car!
