Carroll Shelby, the renegade Texan who built and sold the legendary
289 Cobra, had the idea to apply the Shelby magic to Ford's hot,
new Mustang. It was a match made in heaven. By 1968, however, the
competition was catching up, and Ford needed a car that could beat
its emerging rivals head to head.
Shelby's 360-hp, 428-cu. in. GT 500 was performing respectably, but
when the special Cobra-Jet engine was developed, how could Shelby
resist? Thus, the GT 500 KR - the King of the Road - was born. The
Cobra-Jet 428 engine was rated at 'just' 335 hp as a ruse to fool
the competition and the insurance companies. The engine, in fact,
pumped out at least 400 hp and 440 foot-pounds of torque. The KR
included a number of engine modifications over the 428 Police
Interceptor engine in standard GT500s, such as: low-riser heads
from the famed 427 engine, a beefier crank, rods and pistons.
Additionally, the KR had larger brakes, under-hood suspension
bracing and staggered rear shocks to prevent axle wind-up and wheel
hop, making the KR the best of the best.
This stunning GT500 KR was delivered new to Stark Hickey Ford of
Royal Oak, Missouri, in the stunning Lime Gold paint in which it is
presented today. An accompanying Marti report confirms that
additional options included power disc brakes, shoulder harnesses,
a sport deck rear seat, an AM radio, Power steering and power disc
brakes. A range of documents accompany this GT500 KR, including
extensive service records. These include a detailed breakdown of
work as part of a major restoration during 2009/2010 and more
recent parts and servicing totalling €8,600 in 2018. Presented in
excellent condition, this GT500 KR wants for nothing and is ready
to be enjoyed, its new owner truly enjoying the full 'King of the
Road' experience.

Der abtr�nnige Texaner und Sch�pfer der legend�ren 289 Cobra,
Carroll Shelby, wollte den Zauber des Namens Shelby auch auf Fords
neuen Mustang ausweiten. Ein grandioser Plan, denn 1968 hatte sich
die Konkurrenz mittlerweise eng an die Fersen des Ponys geheftet,
und Ford brauchte ein Auto, das die aufkommende Konkurrenz im
direkten Aufeinandertreffen schlagen konnte.
Shelbys 7 Liter GT 500 leistete 360 PS, eine ganze beeindruckende
Leistung. Doch als sich der neue Cobra Jet Motor anbot, wie konnte
Carroll da widerstehen? So kam es also zum GT 500 KR - dem King of
the Road. Der Cobra Jet 428 cubic inch Motor war auf dem Papier
�nur" mit 335 PS angegeben, um die Konkurrenz im Dunkeln zu lassen
und wohl auch die Versicherungen. In Realit�t wuchtete der V8 wohl
eher 400 PS auf die Kurbelwelle und produzierte ein Drehmoment von
knapp 600 Nm. Gegen�ber dem Police Interceptor 428 cid aus dem GT
500 hatte der KR Motor Zylinderk�pfe aus dem ber�hmten 427er Motor,
eine verst�rkte Kurbelwelle, Pleuel und Kolben. Hinzu kamen gr��ere
Bremsen, Domstreben und versetzte D�mpfer, um das Achstrampeln
unter Kontrolle zu bekommen. All dies machte den KR zum �Best of
the Best".
Dieser beeindruckende GT 500 KR wurde neu in Royal Oak im
US-Bundesstaat Missouri bei Stark Hickey Ford im gleichen �Lime
Gold" ausgeliefert, in dem er sich heute pr�sentiert. Der zum
Fahrzeug geh�rende Marti-Report weist als zus�tzliche Extras
Servoscheibenbremsen, Dreipunktgurte, eine hintere Ablage, ein
Mittelwellenradio und Servolenkung aus. Zu diesem GT 500 KR geh�ren
eine Reihe von Unterlagen: zus�tzlich zu den Wartungsbelegen ist
eine umfangreiche Dokumentation einer in den Jahren 2009 und 2010
durchgef�hrten Restaurierung zu finden, dar�ber hinaus in 2018 eine
Rechnung �ber Teile und Unterhalt f�r €8.600. Dieser GT 500 KR ist
in exzellentem Zustand, ben�tigt nichts und ist bereit f�r einen
neuen Besitzer, der einmal �King of the Road" sein m�chte.
