Largely forgotten by the general public, Gabriel Voisin was one of the standout mechanical inventors and engineers in the 20th century. Among car collectors, not least those who appreciate extraordinary design and aesthetically beautiful solutions to all things mechanical, he remains justly revered across the globe. In the beginning he became possibly the greatest aviation pioneer in France by manufacturing one of the world's first reliable aircraft in 1907. Avions Voisin became the world's first airplane manufacturer, benefitting from government contracts during the First World War.

After the armistice in 1918, Gabriel Voisin developed an automobile design that in 1919 became the Voisin M1, powered by a four-litre Knight-type sleeve valve engine. In 1920, the model was re-named C1 in honour of Gabriel's dead brother Charles. The sleeve valve engine became a defining characteristic of Voisin cars in the ensuing years, and Gabriel designed such motors for use throughout the range, from the smallest 13 CV to the largest 28 and 30 CV cars. The C23 was introduced in 1930 with a three-litre six-cylinder engine, corresponding to 17 fiscal CV. With approximately 80 bhp on tap, the car was good for a top speed of around 120 km/h.

Although the C23 was manufactured in minute numbers from a modern perspective, it was successful by Voisin standards. In 1936 when the model went out of production, 355 chassis had been made, of which approximately 15 survive today. Contrary to most luxury carmakers of the time, few Voisins were coachbuilt. Gabriel Voisin had a deep mistrust of coachbuilders, thinking that they were incapable of meeting his exacting engineering standards or achieving the demanding quality of his proprietary construction techniques - never mind living up to his perfectionist aesthetic demands. Indeed, C23 chassis 47001 is fitted with a beautifully proportioned factory body to a Gabriel Voisin design. Given the chassis number, it is believed that 47001 was the first or second C23 built.

The car's history prior to the early 1980s is not known. A photograph taken in the UK in the 1950s has a notation on the reverse that reads 'ex Prince Bira', although there is no other indication that 47001 may have belonged to the famous privateer racing driver and member of the Thai Royal family. The car was exported from the UK to Holland prior to 1985 and kept at the Airforce Museum in Soesterberg until 1992 when it was acquired by R.T. Meijer who enjoyed the car until his death in 2001. In 2005, ownership went to A. Th. Meijer of Wassenaar, an affluent suburb of The Hague. Meijer, who was brother to the deceased former owner, commissioned a comprehensive restoration, and from 2005 to 2008, approximately €160.000 was spent on bodywork, mechanical restoration, chrome and nickel plating, as well as a complete refurbishment of the interior.

Great care was taken to preserve as many original components as at all possible, including the retention of many of the internal parts of the engine, which had survived in a remarkably intact state. The body was repainted to a high standard by Martin Dijkhof. When the interior was re-trimmed, a piece of older material was discovered that was likely the original design. This was copied in France and used to complete the restoration.

With a mere 15 survivors of the model, a Voisin C23 is a very rare automobile. It is believed that only a handful exist with the aesthetically pleasing original conduite int�rieure coachwork as mounted on chassis 47001. Its style is a testament to the artistic Art Deco-inspired functionality of Gabriel Voisin designs. It is an automobile where the rear-mounted double spares and large travel trunks, beautifully positioned to the rear and on the running boards, testify to the car's usability for serious long-distance travel, while the Grebel spotlight, polished wheel discs and mechanicals, as well as the gorgeous Art Deco interior, lend a high style that can only be French. In beautiful restored condition, this Voisin will be a focal point in any collection, at any informal gathering of collectors and at any concours d'elegance.

Der von der �ffentlichkeit weitgehend vergessene Gabriel Voisin war ein Besonderer unter den technischen Erfindern und Ingenieuren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Doch ist er noch heute hoch angesehen unter den Automobilsammler in der Welt, insbesondere jenen, mit einem Gesp�r f�r au�erordentliches Design und �sthetisch ansprechende L�sungen f�r technische Herausforderungen aller Art. Am Anfang war er wahrscheinlich einer der gr��ten Flugpioniere aller Zeiten, als er 1907 eines der ersten zuverl�ssigen Flugzeuge der Welt baute. Als erster Flugzeughersteller der Welt profitierte Avions Voisin von Regierungsauftr�gen w�hrend des Ersten Weltkriegs.

Nach Kriegsende 1918 entwarf Gabriel Voisin ein Automobildesign, aus dem 1919 der Voisin M1 wurde, angetrieben von einem Vierliter-Schiebermotor vom Typ Knight. 1920 wurde das Modell zu Ehren von Gabriels verstorbenem Bruder Charles in C1 umbenannt. Der Schiebermotor wurde zu einem charakteristischen Merkmal der Voisin Automobile, so dass Gabriel eine Reihe solcher Motoren f�r den Einsatz in verschiedenen Modellen entwarf, angefangen beim kleinsten 13 CV bis zu den gro�en 28 und 30 CV Modellen. 1930 wurde der C23 mit einem Dreiliter Sechszylindermotor vorgestellt, der 17 CV Steuer-PS leistete. Mit rund 80 PS erreichte der C23 eine Spitze von 120 km/h.

Obwohl der C23 aus heutiger Sicht in winzigen St�ckzahlen hergestellt wurde, war er f�r Voisin ein Erfolgsmodell. Bei Produktionseinstellung 1936 waren insgesamt 355 Chassis hergestellt worden, von denen bis heute 15 �berlebt haben. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten Luxusfahrzeugen jener Zeit, wurden nur sehr wenige Voisins mit einer Spezialkarosserie versehen, denn Firmenchef Gabriel Voisin misstraute den Karosseriefirmen zutiefst. Er glaubte nicht, dass sie seinen Anspr�chen an Qualit�t und firmeneigene Fertigungstechniken standhalten konnten, einmal ganz abgesehen von seinen perfektionistischen Anforderungen. So ist auch Fahrgestellnummer 47001 des C23 mit einer wundersch�n proportionierten Werkskarosserie nach Gabriel Voisins Design versehen. Anhand der Fahrgestellnummer ist anzunehmen, das 47001 der erste oder zweite jemals gebaute C23 ist.

Die Geschichte dieses Voisin von vor 1980 ist unbekannt. Zwar existiert ein in d en 50er Jahren in Gro�britannien aufgenommenes Foto, auf dessen R�ckseite �ex-Prinz Bira" geschrieben steht, doch gibt es keine weiteren Anzeichen, das 47001 einmal dem ber�hmten Privatfahrer und Mitglied der thail�ndischen K�nigsfamilie geh�rt haben mag. Vor 1985 war das Fahrzeug von Gro�britannien in die Niederlande exportiert worden und dort im Luftfahrtmuseum on Soesterber bis 1992 ausgestellt worden. Von 92 an geh�rte es R.T.
