The GM A-body platform was the base for many wonderfully iconic
American cars. Way back, when the A-body platform was still being
produced, the Buicks were perhaps the best driving vehicles made on
this platform. Buicks have long been known for their comfortable
ride and effortless driving, but by this time period, they were
gaining a reputation for combining luxury with horsepower. And for
many the Buick GS 455 was the best kept secret for hot rodders.
In true Buick fashion, this 1971 Buick GS455 convertible is a
refined muscle car. It has lots of bite, but a quiet bark! It'll
put you back in your seat, but you'll be comfortable. This is a car
destined to be someone's weekend driving machine. This particular
car is a true survivor, with just one repaint in the original color
and a new convertible top being the only major changes since it was
new. Believed to be a two-owner car, it is documented by the
original Buick price sheet, original delivery checklist and
original protect-o-plate. Originally sold new at San Rafael,
California, this Buick only changed hands in the early 80's before
being offered for sale today.
Extremely highly optioned from factory, lift the hood and you'll
find a period correct Buick 455 V8 that left the factory with 315
horsepower, but an astonishing 450-lbs.ft. of torque at 2,800 RPM.
Bolted to the big block is a TH400 automatic transmission that
sends power to a 12-bolt rear. Collector car enthusiasts know that
anything Buick and a convertible is rare, but what many don't know
is that the 1971 Buick GS 455 convertibles are one of the rarest
Buick muscle cars of all time. Only 165 GS455 convertibles were
ever produced in 1971, of which only 147 were produced with the
automatic in 1971. The engine runs and sounds great, and this car
shifts just like it should! Driving this Buick is an absolute
pleasure, as driving a Buick should be.
The interior is all original, and while it shows some minor aging,
this is to be expected given that this is an unrestored vehicle.
The 50,963 odometer reading is believed to be accurate. Many
enthusiasts prefer the original interior to a restored interior, as
it just has a different feel to it! For being unrestored, the
interior is in excellent condition as a whole and could easily be
enjoyed as-is with no major improvements needed. Headed out for a
sunny cruise? Unlatch the top, hit the switch, and down the top
goes-that's right, power top! Additional features include the
original AM radio (which works!) and power seats. Truly, there are
no disappointments to be found.
The exterior is in as good condition as can be expected of any car
this age that hasn't seen a restoration. Though it has been
repainted once before, the repaint appears to have been a quality
job and shows well. Aside from minor blemishes in low-visibility
areas, the car could be easily enjoyed in this paint for many more
years without worry. The convertible top was replaced with the
correct color top at the same time as the car was painted. All of
the brightwork, wheels, and emblems are in excellent condition!
This is an honest, unrestored Buick of a rare breed. A discerning
buyer would be hard pressed to find another like this, as
production numbers were low and a survivor is hard to come by.
Included with the car is the Protect-o-Plate, Owner's Manual,
original Warranty Booklet, original delivery slip, and many more
documents! This car runs smooth like a sewing machine, and we
cannot stress enough what a pleasure it is to be behind the wheel
of this vehicle. It has really impressive throttle and steering
response and drives as a real Buick should! If you're looking for a
rare and unrestored Buick, don't pass this one up.
