It's hard not to get excited about a nicely-priced example of
classic American luxury, but this 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V
has far more going for it than just value. With its original big V8
under the hood, factory white paint, and A/C still blowing cold,
this is a great example of a luxurious survivor. This two-owner,
7,717 mile Mark V is the lowest mileage example we've ever seen,
and boy are we impressed.
The Continental has always been a great American luxury car with a
TON of vintage sheetmetal. The gothic Mark V was longer, wider, and
lower than its predecessors. This coupe has the great big
personality of the 1970s without the drab earthtone color pallet.
Its sophisticated original white paintwork is the perfect backdrop
for the razor-sharp fender creases and plentiful chrome accents.
The front has the Rolls-Royce style grille, and 1970s chic flat
front hidden headlights. This is accented by attractive parking
light lenses that are miniature works of casting genius. Out back,
the deck lid features the Continental's trademark spare tire
hump/continental kit. But what really makes this Mark V stand above
the others are all the great factory features that remain on the
car today. From the red half-vinyl roof with opera window, to the
delicate red pinstriping, to the turbine-style wheels - it all
feels like 1979 all over again.
The right person ordered this coupe, because a red interior is
always a great choice for these vehicles. It has sophisticated tone
with just enough flash not to be ostentatious - and that was the
whole point of the Mark V line. The deep wine color covers
everything, including the seats, carpeting, steering wheel and
dash. While the car is survivor quality, the entire interior is
superbly preserved. The seats, carpet, dash, trim, gauges, etc. are
all in fantastic condition, further proof that this Lincoln was a
garage queen its entire life. The pillow-top seats have that
feeling of true cruising luxury, and you have the choice to seat
six total, or fold down the front armrest to give you true
individual luxury. As expected from a vehicle of this caliber,
there are plenty of factory luxuries, including power seats, power
locks, power windows, cruise control, and the factory air
conditioning that's blowing nice and cold. There is even a Cartier
in-dash clock in front of the driver (and it works!), so you know
this is true automotive jewelry. Everything is as Lincoln intended,
and in excellent condition.
Ford's smooth and refined 400 cubic-inch Cleveland V8 provides
effortless performance in the Continental. It has good horsepower,
but the real story is the torque that's enough to pull a boat. Of
course, you will likely never want to tow a yacht in this beautiful
big bodied car, but it's this kind of available strength that allow
you to smoothly and quickly cruise away from the stoplight. And
because the car has been so original so far, it should be no
surprise that this is the numbers-matching powerplant. While it's
the perfect car for the drive-in (after all, it's more comfortable
than any movie theater seat), there's much more to this Mark V. It
has a three-speed C6 automatic transmission, power steering, and
disc brakes at all four wheels. This means you can ride in comfort
to car shows as far away as you want.
