Vehicle Description
1993 Yamaha GTS 1000
The GTS1000 is most notable for its innovative motorcycle
suspension, specifically a RADD front suspension designed by James
Parker. This suspension provided improved stability under braking,
but the improvement did not justify the additional cost for the
consumer, and the bike was not commercially successful. As a
result, low numbers were made, and even lower exist today...shall
we say rare?
Falling under the heading of "Sport Bike" AKA "Crotch
Rocket/Tourer" this bike was not only innovative in the fork-less
front-end design but had many other racing inspired technologies
under the full array fairings and cowlings. A few examples would be
electronic fuel injection, anti-lock braking system, and a
catalytic converter. The engine was taken from the Yamaha FZR1000
of the time, and incorporated Yamaha's Genesis engine technology,
though it was limited by design to 100 bhp. It was coupled to a
5-speed transmission, and chain driven. With its weight to power
ratio it was rated as an upper medium performer.
Throughout its life this bike has had 1-owner, and was never laid
down, and looks almost like it was ridden from the showroom. A
piece of history brought down by high cost, and not enough gain to
sustain it, the bike lasted through 3 years of production. Now very
affordable, this scarce, stylish, yet capable is a completely
usable bike: now that's cool in the Classic Auto Mall Book...
