Vehicle Description
The 1974 Plymouth Road Runner was certainly the last of a dying
breed. Changing vehicle regulations and increasing gas prices led
to consumer's demanding more efficient vehicles, and so the
fuel-hungry Mopar muscle cars dwindled. However, the Road Runner
did not go down without a fight! Before being replaced by the Fury
and relegated to a Volare trim package, the Road Runner stayed both
beautiful and powerful. This 1974 Road Runner has had some custom
touches added since it left the factory, but it continues to
capture the spirit of the original Road Runners thanks to a killer
paint job, rumbling MOPAR V8 and plenty of options that make this
car a blast to drive.
When approaching this Plymouth, the first thing you'll notice is
the slick black paint job. As any car enthusiast may know, black
paint is easy to put on but hard to make look smooth. One glance
down the side of this car proves that any bodywork performed has
been done to a high degree of quality, as the lack of imperfections
is apparent. If there were any imperfections, they would have a
hard time hiding from black paint! Most of the chrome trim,
including the bumpers, has been blacked out to give this car a
slightly custom and almost sinister appearance. Additionally, the
black is accented by the bright yellow Road Runner stripes. The
wheel beauty rings, drip rail trim, and windshield trim have been
left in their original finish so as to provide some light to the
dark expanse that is this car. The wheels are Mopar rally wheels
with the early style (and desirable) center caps. Though now
painted black, the fender tag shows that this car left the factory
with option code G74 for "Dual Chrome Racing Mirrors." This car was
also originally optioned with the J54 "Sport Hood."
The interior is clean and simple, complete with more custom work to
match the exterior including yellow and black seats with Road
Runner logos in the headrests. The black is vinyl while the yellow
is suede or some such similar material. Even the center console has
a custom yellow insert! As a whole, the interior is clean and
complete with lots of original parts. The A/C works as it should,
and this was a factory bucket seat car. Everything including the
original gauges functions properly!
Under the hood, you'll find a Chrysler 400 big block with headers,
an aluminum radiator, and an Edelbrock carb sitting atop an
Edelbrock Torker intake. Additionally, you'll notice the original
V-style A/C compressor which has been retrofitted to accept modern
R-134A refrigerant. Though it was originally a 383 car, the 400
looks right at home and sounds mean! Additional under-hood upgrades
include Mopar Performance valve covers, a Mopar Performance air
cleaner, an MSD Blaster ignition coil, and aftermarket spark plug
wire separators.
This is a nice, high-quality mild custom that would make a
fantastic weekend car or unique daily! It is a tidy and somewhat
subtle custom that utilizes lots of original parts to maintain that
classic feel.
