1971 Volvo 1800 E
Though not particularly fast for the era, the cars were sleek grand
tourers perfectly suited to use across the Continent or in the USA.
The rock-solid engineering would become famous over time, with
perhaps the most famous car being the high mileage Volvo P1800 that
belongs to Irv Gordon, who's covered over 5 million kilometers and
counting (3 million miles). The best-known P1800 and perhaps the
most famous Volvo outright was the white one driven by Roger Moore
in the hit UK TV series "The Saint". The car featured heavily in
almost all episodes which did absolutely no harm to sales, and in
interviews in later years Moore would explain that the P1800 was
the favorite screen car of his career.
For consignment a P1800 E with a mere 360,000 miles on her. A
recent total engine rebuild and the lack of rust in the key areas
(body mounts behind front tires, around headlights, and under door
panels) this car is definitely worth a look. It's not a svelte
Swedish blonde, however it is a Volvo sports car...and this is
Classic Auto Mall after all!
Exterior
Presents in California White, a nicely done respray, but all clean
and chrome and brite work looks just great. A near perfect oval
rimmed chromed grille, and chromed bezel headlights are seen
flanking the hood. Nice clover rim wheels are seen all around, and
badging is in fair condition all around. A contrasting black
locking fuel door is correct, as well as the two stainless topped
mini fins which float atop the dual round taillights on each side.
The car ends with a chrome tipped single exhaust.
Interior
The correct red color leather (re: build plate) seats are installed
however it is believed the inserts are not original and have been
recently replaced as they show very little wear. Red carpet is
flooding the floor and is in fair condition. Door panels are from a
1960 something model and are not original to this car. Instrument
panel, gearshift and other interior parts show in fair condition,
excepting the headliner which is in good condition and is in
white.
Drivetrain
A newly rebuilt B20E 121 CID engine without the fuel injection but
a replacement downdraft Weber carburetor is now installed. This is
backed by an M41 gearbox with the Laycock electronic overdrive
actuated by a small lever on the steering wheel left column. The
overdrive is functioning well.
Undercarriage
Rust free especially in known problem areas which shows the care
the consigner took of this car during his 30 years of ownership.
Consigner states there was a repair to the trunk floor due to a
battery that was in the trunk and had turned on its side and
corroded the metal....so this was replaced. 4-wheel disc brakes are
noted on this car.
Not a garage queen, it is not meant to take to shows and win all
sorts of ribbons. No.... this car is meant to drive. The consigner
was attempting to reach the 1 million mile mark however fell short.
It was well maintained throughout its life, is now rebuilt, sans
fuel injection, but runs like a Swedish (sic) watch.
