Few manufacturers were as successful in rocketing a model back to
the forefront of the American buying public's attention as Dodge
was with its Challenger and this 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker
Edition provides plenty of evidence as to why. It offers a great
blend of modern technology and engineering that pairs well with all
the vintage cachet the Challenger has earned over the years.
Dodge really hit a home run with this design, which is an instantly
recognizable homage to the Challengers that wowed onlookers in the
'70s with just the right amount of refinement and modernization
added. There were only 2000 of these special edition Challengers
made during this year, so the collectability factor is definitely
there. This special model was equipped with an exterior configured
to impress onlookers and fellow exhibitors at the 2013 SEMA show
and Dodge definitely accomplished its mission. Against a clean
white backdrop, a wide black accenting stripes runs the length of
the hood, passing over the distinctive Shaker hood scope that, like
its vintage predecessors, is fully functional - it ushers cold,
dense air to the waiting powerplant below the hood. Badged black
stripes just above the contrasting rocker panels further proclaim
this Challenger's special status and both the front air dam and
compact rear spoiler blend very nicely with the rest of the
exterior.
Dodge outfitted this Challenger with a stellar interior as well.
The two-tone leather, black leather buckets feature striking red
accents and have a definite aftermarket appearance to them - even
though they're definitely factory-issued - and the door panels
they're bracketed by wear a matching pattern. The instrument panel
features a collection of sharp looking gauges that combine analog
and digital elements on their faces and everything on board seems
to function just as intended. Being a modern day muscle car, all
the comfort and convenience features you could want - and then some
- are on board, including a sunroof, air conditioning, cruise
control, power windows and door locks, power seats and an AM/FM
stereo system that's navigated by a sizable display and certainly
offers no shortage of additional audio options. It features not
only Sirius Satellite Radio connectivity, but also a USB port to
connect your iPod or other sound source of your choosing, as well
as Bluetooth. The included anti-theft system helps to ensure that
this Dodge never leaves your driveway unintended. The trunk area in
back is in good order, with a still-fresh rubber seal sitting below
the deck lid to keep the elements from intruding.
The Hemi engine has been a cornerstone of MoPar engineering
seemingly forever, and the 5.7 liter V8 that's on board here is a
fine representative. It sits in a very clean engine compartment
with its distinctive Shaker scoop front and center. Good for a full
375 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, it starts up easily and
sends a nice, deep note out of the dual exhaust. The powerplant is
accompanied by an 8-speed automatic transmission that extracts
every bit of acceleration from the Hemi's considerable output and
can be shifted conventionally, as well as by the paddle shifters
situated behind the steering wheel. Power steering that's light but
responsive pairs with power disc brakes at all four corners that
carry sizable rotors to make this Dodge easy to navigate and
capable of stopping with repeated fade-resistant ease on its set of
sizable 20" stock wheels with BF Goodrich G Force Comp 2 tires.
This 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker Edition combines exhilarating
