Vehicle Description
If you were to take a poll asking classic car aficionados what
model epitomizes the entire genre, you'd almost certainly get quite
a few responses naming some of the Chevys of the mid-'50s, like
this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe. Decked out in its super
sharp paint job and sporting an ultra-fresh, skillfully refurbished
interior, it makes a very strong case for itself.
Contrasting two tone paint jobs were a signature look for this
model and the turquoise and white color scheme now draped over the
exterior represents the look in good fashion - the paint has a nice
shine which will garner plenty of second looks and admiration, and
a professional cut and buff would take it up a notch even further.
Chevys of this era were defined in part by their elaborate
collection of chrome, including rugged front bumpers that were a
conversation piece unto themselves, signature egg crate front
grilles and long stretches of trim running the lengths of their
sides, and the examples on display here are all in very sharp,
blemish-free condition. The glass on all sides of the cabin appears
to have been recently replaced and the badging from front to back
is looking great, upping the curb appeal of this pivotal classic
even higher than it already was. The exterior alignment is also on
point, with precise body lines and clean, consistent gaps
everywhere you look.
Inside the doors, everything is looking great. From all appearances
the seating was refurbished very recently, so both the front and
back bench seats are sporting very clean two tone, turquoise and
white vinyl covers that match the door panels to each side of them,
as well as the exterior for a nice, finished look. Both the
contrasting carpeting below and the snug headliner above are very
well fitted and - also mirroring what's outside - every length of
chrome ornamentation looks like it was just polished. The dash area
is another very strong feature on this '55, with its matching
fan-shaped instrument cluster and decorative passenger side panel
looking their best and a vintage-looking AM/FM/cassette stereo with
an auxiliary port for iPod connectivity precisely installed at the
center. A trio of aftermarket gauges sit just below in a woodgrain
accented console that blends in perfectly with the surroundings.
Raise the deck lid in back and you're greeted by a very nicely
detailed trunk area, with a 12" JL subwoofer cabinet and a full
size spare resting inside surrounded by smooth, precisely painted
steel.
A 1968 307 cubic inch V8 sits in place of the original powerplant
in a nicely detailed engine compartment. It's topped by a chrome
Edelbrock air cleaner, under which sits a 4-barrel Quadrajet carb
and aluminum intake, with a pair of chrome valve covers on its
sides. The small block engine starts right up with a turn of the
key and sends a rich, subtle note out of the Glasspack-style
mufflers as it pairs with a period-correct, 2-speed automatic
Powerglide transmission. A number of components inside have been
replaced, including the upgraded ignition system, master cylinder
and brake booster, while farther forward the radiator now teams
with an electric fan to keep engine temperatures under control.
Power brakes - with discs up front - bring this classic's 18" Torq
Thrust II wheels that are wearing Firestone Firehawk tires to nice
easy stops. Below, the undercarriage looks very solid.
