With sporty styling outside and Jeep guts inside, AMC advertised
the 1973 Jeep Commando as "The Jeep for All Reasons". It was
designed to be a capable utility vehicle that served both the
4-Wheel Drive consumer looking for a vehicle with proven off-road
capabilities as well as the on-road 2-Wheel Drive consumer looking
for a spacious vehicle with "refined road manners" that was "silky,
smooth and sporty". The Commando was an effort at offering a
vehicle with broad appeal that offered the best of all worlds. The
Jeepster came in both a wagon and pickup models. It can be said
that the Commando was one of the first vehicles that bridged the
gap from station wagon to utility truck, helping define today's
Sport Utility segment.
This 1973 Jeep Commando is the result of a complete body-off
restoration. From the exterior to the interior, it is apparent that
nothing was overlooked when restoring this vehicle. Every nut and
bolt on the Commando is polished stainless steel and the
transmission, transfer-case, drive shafts, gas tank, door frames
and several other components have been powder coated. This Commando
rides on a Straight 6 - 258 cubic inch motor, the larger motor
offered in 1973, that has been bored 30 over and tied to a Turbo
400 Transmission. A mild street cam and split coated headers have
been added and the Jeep has power front disc brakes. With only
18,500 original miles, this Commando is nicer than the day it came
off the showroom floor. Jeeps, especially those that are unique and
have a great history, are becoming more and more collectible each
day. This unique Commando is undoubtedly one to see.
Unless stated otherwise, vehicle mileage on title is exempt and
unknown if original.
