Vehicle Description
1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28
A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race
of Champions or IROC would pit all-star drivers from numerous
venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars.
Excepting the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet,
and they chose to feature the Camaro.
This IROC version of the 1987 Camaro is in full IROC street garb.
Special painted badging, a low-slung windshield, some fairings, and
a powerful 305ci V8 and many optioned add ons, make this IROC Z
very nice indeed.
Exterior
Victory Red paint covers the straight steel body panels, fairings
and spoiler of the car. Flame Red Metallic is the color of the
moldings. Some faults in the paint are noted on the driver's side
hood. This Z is deemed a hatchback and has a remote entry for it.
IROC Z badging in white fade is seen on each door, as well as Z28
in chrome/white paint on the front lower fender. Hood louvers, and
a removable smoked glass "T" top are present as well. 16 x 8 Cast
Aluminum wheels in silver metallic with special order caps are seen
on all 4 corners.
Interior
A snazzy medium gray cloth bucket seat configuration shows angled
stitching in the middle panels on seat and back. This also holds
true for the rear 2+2 seats. All cloth is clean and in good
condition. A menacing black console and dash with a premium gauge
package, presents all the critical instrumentation, as well as
climate controls, radio, EQ with a 4-speaker setup, and automatic
shift lever. A flip top storage area is available which also
doubles as a convenient arm rest. Cruise control, and power windows
are installed. There is an interesting pre-digital mileage
"counter" if you will, that can be set for numerous important
maintenance interval reminders and appointment date above the
rear-view mirror in the center part of the "T" structure. Power
steering, power brakes, power mirrors and a power driver's seat are
working and are great conveniences with this sports car.
Drivetrain
The 305ci puts out 190hp. This V8 engine (which replaces the
original engine due to a warranty issue) is mated to a TH700R4
3-speed with overdrive automatic transmission is attached to the
back of the mill. All this puts power to a 3.23 gear ratio rear
with limited slip rear axle.
Undercarriage
Very clean and noted with no rust with a very stable frame, show
this car has been well cared for.
Excepting the badging, this car is disguised as a mild mannered
everyday 1987 Chevrolet Camaro.
A look under the hood, as well as the IROC status, makes it
anything but mild mannered. All in good condition, this car is a
definite goer, but can also be viewed at any car show you may want
to drive it to.
