For Sale: 1937 Buick Special in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1937 Buick Special

The Buick Special was an automobile produced by Buick. It was usually Buick's lowest-priced model, starting out as a full-size car in 1936 and returning in 1938 (after a two-year hiatus) as a mid-size.

This 1937 Special (Model 41) is a 4-door trunk back sedan. An interior redux several years ago, original paperwork, and exterior paint that shows the passage of time in the form of some crackle, some chips, some overspray, and some patina. An example of an automobile that was designed during Art Deco's heyday, many style queues have been taken from that era. Certainly not a perfect car, or even close to a garage queen, however it runs smoothly, and is definitely a drivable car.

Exterior
A black respray, performed several years ago, shows cracking, crazing, some chipping and overall patina. Chrome is somewhat pitted and has areas of dullness. Doors open and close easily, and fit is good. Large sweeping fenders connect by a running board, and have spare tires encased on metal, mounted onto the fenders. The fronts have the bullet style turn signals, and headlights. Coupled with a tall horizontal chrome ribbed grille, long hood, and chromed horizontal vent ribs on the side of the flip up hood with a center hinge. Black steel wheels hold wide white sidewall tries and show trim rings and a center "BUICK" script in the middle of a small dish type hubcap.

Interior
Swing open the "B" pillar hinged 4 doors, and you will be entering Tan Bedford Cord heaven. A bench in the front, and back can easily accommodate 5 passengers. Matching windlace is seen surrounding each doorway and presents itself on the edges of the seating as well. Door panels, and passenger pillar walls are covered in Art Deco styled embossed felt. This and the handles are in very good condition. A felt headliner is seen as well, and in good condition. Carpeting is on the floors, and in front there is a rubber mat that stretches across the entire bench seat. Dash is in fair condition and is shown painted in flat brown. This houses the awesome Art Deco styled gauges, bakelite knobs and pulls, and large chrome center area that may be a heating vent, as a heater is seen under the dash. Above the glove box is a clock, and large locking bakelite glovebox pull.

Drivetrain
The original inline 8-cylinder engine is in the engine bay and is the standard 248ci inline 8-cylinder engine. It has not been restored although consigner states they installed a new radiator core, and water pump, and hoses and belts. A manual transmission is installed.

Undercarriage
Surface rust is seen, however no real damaging invasive rust is noted. Doors seem mostly rust free; some cracking and chipping is throughout the underside of the doors and rocker.

In my mind I can see this car racing down a dirt road, gangsters leaning out of the windows firing at the law trying to make their getaway. I can also picture a well-dressed couple, woman in a long dress with a fur stole, and long cigarette holder, man in tuxedo, sitting in the back with their driver taking them out for an evening on the town. Picture whatever you want to do with this beautifully styled '37 Buick.
