636-600-4600 Emerging from the previous year's economic recession,
Ford brought its new medium-priced division, Edsel, back for a
second year in 1959. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present
this 1959 Edsel Corsair Convertible. Sold on an actual mileage
Pennsylvania title, showing 20,480. Made in Ford's Louisville,
Kentucky (VIN code U) assembly plant (the only Ford factory making
1959 Edsels) on November 29, 1958 (code 29L), this is one of only
1,343 Corsair Convertibles made in 1959. The previous owner lived
in Belpre, Ohio. Dressed in President Red (code F), the car's paint
and trim are in overall excellent condition, with some minor
blemishes visible upon close inspection. The bodywork is straight,
including the rear fender skirts, the car's chrome bumpers look
great but the car's windshield wipers are inoperable. The
power-folding white soft-top provides great contrast to the paint
and looks good. The car rides on Coker Classic wide whitewalls,
size P215/75R14 at all four corners. Within those tires are steel
wheels topped by body-color factory wheel covers. The tires and
wheels are in better-than-average condition. Under the hood is the
Ford-Edsel 361 CID "Super Express" V-8 engine (VIN code W) with a
four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts. Backing this motor is a
Dual Power Drive three-speed automatic transmission (code 4) and
nine-inch rear end with a 2.91:1 differential (code 5). Inside, the
car's red and black (code 44) interior is in overall very good
order. The red and black vinyl seats look great while the black
carpeting is in satisfactory order. The big three-spoke steering
wheel looks ready for cruising while the highly stylized and metal
instrument panel sparkles, however the fuel gauge is inoperable but
the inner door panels are in very good order. A factory AM radio
completes the interior. The 1959 Edsels were introduced in the fall
of 1958. However, for the 1959 model year, the Citation andPacer
models were dropped from Edsel's model range for 1959, as was the
trouble-proneTeletouch system. The 1959 Edsel's styling was
significantly toned-down, as was the vertical grille assembly,
which now featured a fine bar pattern. The Corsair now represented
the premium Edsel model range, replacing the discontinued Citation.
Unlike in 1958, the Corsair now shared its body panels with the
Ranger - the two being differentiated by trim and options. The
Corsair also gained a four-doorsedanand convertible version. The
1959 Corsair rode on a 120-inch wheelbase and the 361CIDFE V-8 was
standard in sedans, with either a two- or four-barrel carburetoras
was a three-speedmanual transmission. Replacing theTeletouch
transmissionwas theMile-O-Matic, a two-speed automatic, or
Dual-Power Drive 3-speed automatic (only available with the 361).A
heater, defroster, and radio remained optional, as well.
Competition to this Edsel in 1959 included DeSoto's Firedome
droptop, Dodge's Custom Royal Super Ram Convertible, Ford's own
Thunderbird Convertible, Mercury's Monterey Convertible,
Oldsmobile's Dynamic 88 Convertible and Pontiac's Catalina
Convertible. Documentation includes the original owner's manual, a
1959 Edsel sales brochure, Ohio license plates and other,
miscellaneous documents. If you're looking for a rolling
