45,789 original miles. Two owners. Fresh 355 cubic inch crate motor, 700R4, upgraded suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, nice paint, excellent original interior, new stereo. A heck of a lot of car for not a lot of cash!
Experts will note that this Camaro has been updated with 1992 IROC-Z bodywork, and without checking serial numbers, you’ll never be able to tell what year it really is. With so few miles, it obviously was never a daily driver and has never, ever seen snow or salt, so all the original sheetmetal looks factory fresh. It was repainted a few years ago, but white is the original color so there’s no signs of the work in the nooks and crannies. It fits together as well as any third-gen Camaro we’ve seen and with a modest cowl-induction hood and satin black Z/28 stripes, it’s definitely menacing. Correct Z/28 and ‘IROC-Z’ decals were installed and it even has a correct rear spoiler with a third brake light, something it wouldn’t have worn in 1984. And check out those cool halo headlights (they bolt in without modifications and the original headlight buckets are included if you want to go back to stock). This is obviously a car that has been loved, and thanks to a conscientious long-term owner, you know it has been carefully maintained and not abused.
That’s gray factory upholstery and for being 35 years old, it’s rather remarkably well preserved. It also backs up the mileage claims, because there’s no significant wear beyond a small repair on the driver’s outside bolster. Original carpets show a few signs of age but nothing abnormal and even the dash pad and door panels are in great shape. The three spoke steering wheel is a big improvement over the factory’s plastic wheel and the original gauges are all fully operational with the new engine. The auxiliary switches are for the halo lights and the lock-up torque converter on the 700R4, and the car features ice cold A/C, a tilt wheel, and an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo so it’s ready to cruise. In the quest to create something unique, it was given a fresh 355 cubic inch crate motor about 1000 miles ago. Just your average 350 horsepower daily driver. There’s and Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and intake up top, aluminum heads, and a set of block-hugging headers to make some torque. Compression ratio is a very friendly 9.8:1 and the Comp Cams camshaft is aggressive enough to sound predatory but it still idles quite well. It’s been properly tuned and obviously it fits perfectly in the Camaro’s engine bay. Up front there’s a factory serpentine belt drive system for the accessories, all of which are recent, and a giant radiator up front eliminates hot weather worries. You can see just how clean the engine bay is, more proof that this car has never been out in the elements, and the supporting hardware is all OEM, so service is easy. It starts quickly, idles properly, and throttle response is instant thanks to a carburetor that’s been properly sized—too much is usually too much. You’ll also note this hood stays up on its own (it’s steel, not fiberglass) thanks to new struts, and, well, we just can’t find anything to complain about under the hood.
An equally substantial pile of money was invested underneath, starting with a fresh Atlas 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission with a Corvette torque converter inside. The suspension has been augmented with KGX adjustable shocks and struts, there’s a trick Spohn tubular torque arm suspension upgrade, complete with built-in driveshaft loop, and fresh springs fore and aft. Welded-in subframe connectors reinforce the tub, making this one of the most solid-feeling 3rd gen Camaros we’ve driven. 3.27 gears on a Posi live inside a rare 9-bolt Borg Warner rear end, which includes OEM rear disc brakes. Front brakes have been upgraded with Sure Stop rotors and new pads. A fresh exhaust system features oversized tubing and a Flowmaster muffler, so it sounds fantastic without compromising ground clearance. And for just the right Camaro look, replica Z/28 wheels were installed and carry 225/55/16 performance radials that are very much what such a car would have worn in 1992.
The investment in this car is all out of proportion to its very modest price. If you want fast, inexpensive fun, the Camaro is always a great choice. But this car, with it’s very long list of upgrades and recent work, makes a very compelling argument. It’s still the best stomp-and-steer machine we’ve ever seen! Call now!
