Vehicle Description
There were a total of 629 Oldsmobile Hurst pace cars made in 1972;
499 of them were hardtops, and 279 of those hardtops were built
without sunroofs. This car is one of those 279. The 1972 Oldsmobile
Hurst pace car was developed by Hurst Performance, not Oldsmobile.
Due to a tragic accident involving the 1971 Indy pace car, which
was a Dodge Challenger, the major auto manufacturers were reluctant
to provide the pace car for the 1972 Indy race. Hurst Performance
stepped up and volunteered to sponsor the 1972 pace car. Oldsmobile
provided the Cutlass Supreme coupe and convertible. It was the
first and only time an Indy pace car was sponsored by a
manufacturer other than an automobile manufacturer, and the first
time to include a major supplier's name in the title. The only
color available was Cameo White with reflective 3M gold stripes
that were stickers, not paint. This car is powered by a modified
Oldsmobile engine bored out to 462ci mated to a TH400 automatic
transmission, with a console-mounted Hurst Dual Gate shifter and a
W25 Ram Air hood. This Pace Car Edition coupe has 48,600 original
miles (the title reads mileage exempt) and includes the original
Protect-O-Plate, front page of the vehicle warranty and the front
page of the Official Program from the 56th Indy 500. The original
interior features air conditioning (needs a compressor). It's
rust-free, has been garaged in Florida and was originally from
California.
