The 1950 Hudson Custom Commodore Six Brougham Convertible featured here is finished in the lovely two-tone color combination of White over Aztec Brown with a partially original red interior and beige power folding convertible top. This particular example is one of only approximately 700 built new and was acquired by Hollywood icon Steve McQueen in the 1970’s. The “King of Cool” was no stranger to the Hudson marque, keeping at least four in his private collection with this Commodore Six being McQueen’s only Hudson convertible. Hudson’s are known to have been one of McQueen’s favorite marques as he was frequently seen driving them around in Southern California. In true McQueen fashion, this Commodore Six is powered by an upgraded 308ci inline-6 with legendary Hudson “Twin H-Power” carburation – a period performance upgrade that was reputedly performed shortly after McQueen acquired the Hudson in the 1970’s. Steve enjoyed this Hudson until his passing in 1980; it was then acquired by a friend of McQueen’s. He stored the Hudson for many years in Southern California and maintained the condition of the car as it was while it was in McQueen’s ownership. More recently, this Hudson was released from the private collection of a retired CEO of a heath care organization. It presents wonderfully today, showcasing the same amount of patina and charm that first garnered Steve McQueen’s attention. A recent mechanical service was performed ensuring this classic Hudson Convertible will bring many years of enjoyment to its future caretaker.
Recent public sales of several Steve McQueen owned vehicles have far exceeded market value for similar cars. In 2011, RM Sotheby’s sold McQueen’s 1970 Porsche 911S for nearly $1.4 million while in 2015 Mecum Auctions sold Steve’s 1976 Porsche 930 for nearly $2 million! In 2019, RM sold a similar car at Fort Lauderdale for $165,000. Documented McQueen ownership has proven to yield excellent investment return and we feel that this particular Hudson Custom Commodore will continue to rapidly appreciate. This is a prime market opportunity as the Hudson will certainly yield excellent investment return for the most astute collector or investor. Ready to make an investment that you can actually enjoy? Classic cars have proven to be among the most resilient and rewarding investments in recent years with the Historic Automobile Group Index (HAGI) jumping 39% in 2013, 16% in 2014 and 17% in 2015 while posting gains of 467% over the last 10 years.
